運命の録音中……田中Pの手が震えてる
東京郊外の小さな公園に、ホーホケキョという名前のウグイスが住んでいた。
人間がつけた名前じゃない。
There was a bush warbler named Hōhokekyo living in a small park on the outskirts of Tokyo.
It wasn't a name given by humans.
生まれたときから仲間内でそう呼ばれていた。
理由は単純だ。
It had been called that by its fellow birds since birth.
The reason was simple.
「ホーホケキョ」としか鳴けないから。
Because it could only sing "Hōhokekyo."
他のウグイスたちは「ケキョケキョッ！」とか「ホー、ホー、ホケキョ！」とか、微妙にバリエーションをつけてカッコよく鳴くのに、
ホーホケキョだけは完璧に教科書通りの「ホーホケキョ」。
While other bush warblers sang cool variations like "Kekyo kekyo!" or "Hō, hō, hokekyo!",
Hōhokekyo alone sang the perfectly textbook "Hōhokekyo."
しかも一日中、何百回でも同じ調子で繰り返す。
仲間たちからは「機械みたい」「芸がない」「歌唱力ゼロ」と陰口を叩かれていた。

Its companions gossiped behind its back, calling it "mechanical," "no artistry," and "zero singing ability."
ある春の朝、いつものように「ホーホケキョ、ホーホケキョ」と鳴いていると、
公園のベンチに座っていた中年のおじさんが突然立ち上がった。
One spring morning, as it was singing "Hōhokekyo, hōhokekyo" as usual,
a middle-aged man sitting on a park bench suddenly stood up.
「おおっ！ これだ！ これこそまさに“ザ・日本の春”だ！！」

おじさんは興奮してスマホを取り出し、録音を始めた。
ホーホケキョは警戒して藪の奥に引っ込んだが、おじさんは諦めない。

翌日からドローンまで飛ばして追いかけてくる。
But humans are scary.

しまいには「ウグイス保護団体」が「ストレスで死なせたら許さない」と脅迫めいた声明を出し、
逆に捕獲作戦が加速した。

逃げに逃げて、ホーホケキョはついに埼玉の山奥までたどり着いた。

「最後の“キョ”を0.3秒遅らせる」「“ホー”の途中で一瞬息を抜く」「たまに“ホー……ホケ……”って途中で諦める」

最後の曲で、ホーホケキョはいつもこう締める。

外見の特徴
大きさ：全長約14〜16cm（メスはやや小さい）。スズメより少し小さいくらい。
見た目：地味な単色。全身がオリーブ褐色〜黄緑褐色で、腹は淡いクリーム色。眉斑（まゆばん）が薄く白っぽいのが識別のポイント。

・メジロ（目白）：緑色が鮮やかで目の周りに白い輪がある → ウグイスではない
・ウグイスとメジロは全く別の種類（ウグイスはウグイス科、メジロはメジロ科）
文化的なポイント
・昔の和菓子「鶯餅（うぐいすもち）」は、緑色の餅粉で作るためウグイスの色を連想するが、実際のウグイスは地味な色。
・「鶯色」という色名も、実際の鳥よりずっと鮮やかな黄緑色になっている。
要するに、「声は派手だけど姿は超地味な、春の風物詩の鳥」がウグイス。
「ホーホケキョ」と聞こえてきても、藪の中をじっくり探さないとなかなか姿は見られませんよ。
