揺れるものは、いつか届く - living things

シアノバクテリアのユレモが主人公の

日常の小さな出会いが、心に残る一筋の光になる——そんな物語。

古い用水路の底に、ユレモはいた。
At the bottom of an old irrigation canal, Yuremo existed.

名前はまだなかった。ただの青緑色の糸。
It didn't have a name yet. It was just a blue-green thread.

数千、数万の小さな円盤が首を繋いで、ゆっくりと、ゆっくりと、左右に揺れていた。
Thousands, tens of thousands of tiny discs connected end to end, swaying slowly, gently, left and right.

光が水面を抜けて落ちてくると、ユレモの体はわずかに震えた。
When light passed through the water surface and reached it, Yuremo's body trembled slightly.

クロロフィルが喜ぶ音がする。フィコシアニンが青く歌う。
It was as if chlorophyll was making joyful sounds, and phycocyanin was singing in blue.

「ここにいるよ」と、誰にも聞こえない声で返事をするみたいに。

用水路の仲間たちは、みんな名前を持っていた。

「ミドロさん」はふわふわと浮かんで、いつも陽気だった。
“Midorosan” floated fluffily and was always cheerful.

「アオミドロくん」は絡みつくのが得意で、ちょっと意地悪。
“Aomidorokun” was good at entwining and a bit mischievous.

「ケイソウ姉さん」はガラスみたいに透明で、几帳面に六角形の箱を積み上げていた。
“Keisou-neesan” was glass-like and transparent, meticulously stacking hexagonal boxes.

でもユレモには名前がなかった。
But Yuremo had no name.

揺れるだけ。滑るだけ。光を追いかけるだけ。
It only swayed. It only glided. It only chased the light.

それが悪いわけじゃない。ただ、少し寂しかった。
That wasn’t bad. It was just a little lonely.

ある朝、用水路に大きな影が落ちた。
One morning, a large shadow fell over the canal.

人間の子どもだった。膝まで水に浸かって、ガラス瓶を手に持っている。
It was a human child. Knee-deep in water, holding a glass bottle.

瓶の底に水をすくうと、ユレモの仲間たちが一緒に吸い込まれた。
When the child scooped water into the bottle, Yuremo’s companions were sucked in along with it.

ユレモは慌てて体をくねらせた。

Yuremo hurriedly writhed its body.

左右に、左右に、激しく揺れた。
It shook intensely, left and right, left and right.

まるで「待って！」と叫んでいるように。
As if shouting, “Wait!”

子どもは気づいた。瓶を覗き込んで、目を丸くした。
The child noticed. Peering into the bottle, their eyes widened.

「……なんだこれ、動いてる」
“…What is this? It’s moving.”

ユレモはさらに揺れた。今度はゆっくり。
Yuremo swayed even more. This time slowly.

まるで「ここにいるよ」と挨拶するように。
As if greeting, “I’m here.”

子どもは瓶をそっと水面に戻した。
The child gently returned the bottle to the water surface.

「ごめんね、怖かった？」
“Sorry, were you scared?”

ユレモは答えられなかった。でも、揺れ続けた。
Yuremo couldn’t answer. But it kept swaying.

それは、初めて誰かに「見つめられた」瞬間だった。
It was the first time someone had truly “looked” at it.

それから毎日、子どもはやってきた。
After that, the child came every day.

名前は「ひなた」といった。小学校四年生。
The child’s name was Hinata. A fourth-grade elementary school student.

用水路の生き物が大好きで、いつもスケッチブックを抱えている。
Hinata loved the creatures in the canal and always carried a sketchbook.

ひなたはユレモを「ユレモちゃん」と呼んだ。
Hinata called Yuremo “Yuremo-chan.”

「ユレモちゃん、今日も揺れてるね。

“Yuremo-chan, you're swaying again today.
気持ちいい？光がいっぱいだよ」
Does it feel good? There's so much light!”

ユレモは答えられなかったけど、
Yuremo couldn't answer, but
ひなたがそう言ってくれると、
whenever Hinata said that,
体の中の小さな円盤たちが、いつもより少しだけ速く、嬉しそうに震えた。
the tiny discs inside its body trembled a little faster, seeming delighted.

ある日、ひなたが小さなガラス容器を持ってきて、
One day, Hinata brought a small glass container and said,

「ここに住んでみない？」と言った。
“Would you like to live here?”

容器の中にはきれいな小石と水草が敷き詰められ、
The container was lined with clean pebbles and water plants,
小さなエアポンプまでついていた。
and even had a small air pump.

「私の部屋で、ずっと見てられるようにしたんだ」
“I set it up so I can watch you all the time in my room.”

ユレモは迷った。
Yuremo hesitated.
用水路は広い。光は自由に落ちてくる。

The canal was wide. Light fell freely.

風が水を揺らし、時々大きな泡が笑う。
The wind rippled the water, and sometimes big bubbles laughed.

でも、ひなたの目はまっすぐで、温かかった。
But Hinata's eyes were straightforward and warm.

ユレモは、ゆっくり体を縮めて、トリコームの先をくねらせた。
Yuremo slowly contracted its body and twisted the tip of its trichome.

まるで「うん」と頷くように。
As if nodding, “Yes.”

ひなたは歓声を上げて、そっとユレモをすくい上げた。
Hinata let out a joyful cry and gently scooped Yuremo up.

部屋の窓辺に置かれた小さな水槽。

朝日が差し込むと、ユレモは全力で揺れた。
When morning sunlight poured in, Yuremo swayed with all its might.

左右に、左右に。
Left and right, left and right.

まるで「ありがとう」と言っているみたいに。
As if saying, “Thank you.”

でも、季節は進む。
But seasons moved on.
夏が終わり、秋が来て、窓の外の木が赤くなった。
Summer ended, autumn came, and the trees outside the window turned red.

ひなたの声が、少しずつ少なくなった。
Hinata's voice gradually became less frequent.

「部活が忙しくて……ごめんね、ユレモちゃん」
“Club activities are so busy… Sorry, Yuremo-chan.”

水槽の水は少し濁り始めた。
The water in the aquarium began to grow a bit cloudy.

光は弱くなり、エアポンプの音だけが響く。
The light weakened, and only the sound of the air pump echoed.

ユレモは揺れ続けた。
Yuremo kept swaying.
でも、だんだんゆっくりになった。
But it gradually became slower.

体が重い。

Its body felt heavy.

円盤のひとつひとつが、疲れているみたいだった。
Each disc seemed tired.

ある晩、ひなたが泣きながら部屋に戻ってきた。
One evening, Hinata returned to the room crying.

「転校が決まったんだ……来月には引っ越すの」
“I’ve been told I have to transfer schools…We’re moving next month.”

ユレモは、精一杯揺れた。
Yuremo swayed with all its strength.
今までで一番大きく、激しく。
The biggest and most intense sway ever.

ひなたは水槽に顔を近づけて、
Hinata brought their face close to the aquarium and said,
「ユレモちゃん、どうしよう。
“Yuremo-chan, what should I do?
連れて行けないよ……水槽、揺れちゃうし」
I can’t take you with me… The aquarium would shake too much.”

ユレモは、初めて「言葉」を欲した。
For the first time, Yuremo wanted “words.”

でも、持っているのは揺れることだけ。
But all it had was swaying.

それでも、ユレモは揺れ続けた。
Even so, Yuremo kept swaying.

まるで「大丈夫だよ」と言っているように。
As if saying, “It’s okay.”

まるで「また会えるよ」と言っているように。
As if saying, “We’ll meet again.”

次の日、ひなたは水槽ごと、用水路のほとりに持ってきた。
The next day, Hinata brought the entire aquarium to the edge of the canal.

「ここが一番光がいっぱいだから……ユレモちゃん、帰ってきて」
“This place has the most light…Yuremo-chan, come back home.”

蓋を開けると、ユレモはゆっくりと水に溶け出した。
When the lid was opened, Yuremo slowly dissolved back into the water.

トリコームがほどけ、青緑の糸が用水路に広がった。
Its trichome unraveled, and the blue-green thread spread through the canal.

ひなたはしゃがみ込んで、
Hinata crouched down and said,

「また来るからね。絶対、大きくなった姿を見に来るから」
“I’ll come back. I promise I’ll come see how much you’ve grown.”

ユレモは答えられなかった。
Yuremo couldn’t answer.
でも、最後に大きく、優しく揺れた。
But at the end, it swayed largely and gently.

それから月日は流れた。
Time passed after that.

用水路は変わらず流れ、ユレモの仲間たちは増えたり減ったりした。
The canal continued to flow unchanged, and Yuremo’s companions increased and decreased.

ある春の日。
One spring day.

中学生くらいの少女が、用水路のそばに立っていた。
A girl who looked like a middle school student stood by the canal.

スケッチブックを抱え、髪を少し長くしたひなただった。
It was Hinata, now with slightly longer hair, still holding her sketchbook.

彼女はしゃがんで、水面を見つめた。
She crouched down and gazed at the water surface.

「……ユレモちゃん？」
“…Yuremo-chan?”

水底で、青緑の長い糸がゆっくり揺れていた。
At the bottom, a long blue-green thread was swaying slowly.

昔よりずっと長く、ずっと強く。
Much longer and much stronger than before.
仲間たちと絡み合いながら、光を追いかけて、左右に、左右に。
Entwined with its companions, chasing the light, left and right, left and right.

ひなたは笑った。
Hinata smiled.
涙が一粒、水面に落ちた。
One tear fell onto the water surface.

「大きくなったね。……ありがとう、待っててくれて」
“You’ve grown so much.…Thank you for waiting.”

ユレモは答えた。
Yuremo answered.
言葉ではなく、揺れで。
Not with words, but with swaying.

それは、
It was
「ここにいるよ」
“I’m here”
「ずっとここにいるよ」
“I’ll always be here” —
という、世界で一番静かで、一番確かな返事だった。
the quietest and most certain reply in the whole world.
