オレ、巨頭さんなんだが？ - living things

「今年こそ変態する！」と意気込むも、なぜか永久オタマジャクシ生活中のエゾサンショウウオ・巨頭さん。

北海道の池の底で繰り広げられる、ちょっと情けないけど愛らしい日常を物語にしました。

北海道の山奥、雪解け水がたっぷり溜まった小さな池の底で、今年で3年目の幼生生活を送っているエゾサンショウウオがいた。

In the depths of a small pond deep in the mountains of Hokkaido, filled with plenty of melted snow, there lived an Ezo salamander in its third year as a larva.

名前は……まあ、本人は「巨頭（きょとう）」と名乗っている。

Its name… well, it called itself “Kyotou” (Giant Head).

「オレさ、今年こそ変態する気満々だったんだけどさ……」

“I was totally ready to metamorphose this year, you know…”

巨頭は水底の枯れ葉の上で、ぷかぷかと浮かびながら独り言をつぶやく。

Kyotou muttered to itself while floating gently above the dead leaves on the pond bottom.

体長はもう15センチ近くあるのに、えらはまだバタバタ動いているし、尻尾は透き通ったままで、完全に「オタマジャクシのまま大人」状態だ。

Its body length is already close to 15 cm, yet its gills are still flapping, its tail remains transparent—it’s completely in an “adult still in tadpole form” state.

周りを見渡すと、同じ池に生まれた同級生たちはもうほとんど陸に上がってしまっている。

Looking around, almost all of its classmates born in the same pond have already gone up onto land.

去年の夏には「変態組」と「来年組」に分かれたのだが、巨頭は完全に「来年組」の最古参、いや、もはや「永久来年組」の代表選手になっていた。

Last summer they split into the “metamorphosed group” and the “next year group,” but Kyotou has become the veteran of the “next year group”—no, practically the representative of the “permanent next year group.”

「なんでオレだけ……」

“Why only me…?”

原因は明白だった。

The reason was obvious.

巨頭は、池の中ではちょっとした有名人だったのだ。

Kyotou was something of a celebrity in the pond.

――共食い界の伝説――

—The legend of the cannibalism world—

2年前の春、まだ体長4センチくらいだった頃。

Two springs ago, when it was still only about 4 cm long.

エサが少なくてみんなガリガリになっていた時期に、巨頭は決断した。

When food was scarce and everyone was skin and bones, Kyotou made a decision.

「よし……腹減ったし、隣のヤツ食うか」

“Okay… I’m hungry, so I’ll eat the one next to me.”

その日から巨頭の頭は日に日に大きくなり、口も異様に広がり、目はギョロっと前方に寄った。

From that day on, Kyotou’s head grew bigger day by day, its mouth spread unnaturally wide, and its eyes bulged forward.

いわゆる「巨頭型モーフ」への完全変形である。

It had fully transformed into the so-called “broad-headed morph.”

結果、池の中のエゾサンショウウオ幼生ランキングはこうなった。

As a result, the Ezo salamander larva ranking in the pond became like this.

1位　巨頭（現在進行形でデカい）

1st: Kyotou (currently and continuously huge)

2位　去年食われたヤツの幻影

2nd: The illusion of the one eaten last year

3位　去年食われたヤツの残骸

3rd: The remains of the one eaten last year

巨頭は確かに強くなった。

Kyotou had indeed become strong.

でも同時に、変態に必要なホルモンバランスが完全に狂ってしまったらしい。

But at the same time, the hormonal balance needed for metamorphosis seems to have gone completely haywire.

「オレ、変態したくねぇわけじゃないんだよ……？」

“I’m not saying I don’t want to metamorphose, okay…?”

今日も巨頭は水面近くでブツブツ言っている。

Today too, Kyotou is muttering near the water surface.

そこへ、ひょっこり顔を出したのは、今年生まれたばかりの1年生たちだった。

Then, popping up their faces were the first-year larvae born this year.

まだ体長2センチくらいのちっちゃい子たちだ。

They were still tiny, only about 2 cm long.

「ねえねえ、あの人すっごい頭デカいね！」

“Hey, that person has a really huge head!”

「なんか怖い……でもカッコいいかも……」

“Kinda scary… but maybe cool too…”

「伝説の巨頭さんだよ！　同級生を全部食べたって！」

“It’s the legendary Kyotou-san! They say he ate all his classmates!”

巨頭は水中で盛大にため息をついた。泡がブクブクと上がる。

Kyotou let out a huge sigh underwater. Bubbles rose in profusion.

「全部は食ってねぇよ……半分くらいだよ……」

“I didn’t eat all of them… only about half…”

1年生たちはキャーキャー言いながら近づいてくる。

The first-years come closer, squealing excitedly.

完全にファンクラブ状態である。

They were in full fan-club mode.

巨頭はもう諦めた顔で答えた。

Kyotou answered with a face that had already given up.

「巨頭さん！　どうやったらそんなに頭デカくなるんですか？」

“Kyotou-san! How can we get such a big head?”

「エサはなんですか？　兄弟ですか？　いとこですか？」

“What do you eat? Brothers? Cousins?”

「僕も巨頭になりたいです！」

“I want to become a giant head too!”

巨頭はもう諦めた顔で答えた。

Kyotou answered with a face that had already given up.

「まず……お前らを食うことから始めると良い」

“First… it’s good to start by eating you guys.”

1年生たち「えええええ！？」

First-years: “Eeeeeh!?”

「冗談だよ。……半分冗談」

“Just kidding. …Half kidding.”

その時、水面が大きく揺れた。

At that moment, the water surface shook greatly.

ドボン、と何かが落ちてきた音。

A splash—something had fallen in.

見ると、池の縁から転がり落ちてきたのは――エゾアカガエルのオタマジャクシだった。

Looking up, what had rolled down from the pond’s edge was—an Ezo red frog tadpole.

しかもデカい。体長5センチはありそうな、食べ応え抜群の獲物だ。

And it was big. A full 5 cm long, a prey with excellent eating potential.

巨頭の目がキラーンと光った。

Kyotou’s eyes sparkled with a glint.

「…………おい、今のは見逃さんぞ」

“…Hey, I’m not letting that one get away.”

1年生たち「ひぃぃ！」

First-years: “Hiii!”

巨頭は一瞬で加速した。

Kyotou accelerated in an instant.

長い尻尾をバタバタさせて、水中をロケットのように突進。

Flapping its long tail furiously, it rocketed through the water.

エゾアカのオタマジャクシは慌てて逃げようとしたが、巨頭の巨口はすでに射程圏内だった。

ガブッ！

The Ezo red tadpole tried to flee in panic, but Kyotou’s giant mouth was already within range.

Chomp!

一飲み。

Swallowed in one gulp.

周囲の水が渦を巻き、1年生たちは悲鳴を上げて逃げ散った。

The surrounding water swirled into a vortex, and the first-years scattered away screaming.

「……ふぅ。久々の高タンパク」

“…Phew. First high-protein meal in a while.”

巨頭は満足そうに水底に戻り、枯れ葉の上にドスンと座り込んだ。

Kyotou returned to the bottom with satisfaction and plopped down heavily onto the dead leaves.

腹が少し膨らんでいる。

Its belly was slightly swollen.

すると、さっき逃げた1年生の一人が、恐る恐る戻ってきた。

Then, one of the first-years who had fled earlier timidly came back.

「……あの、巨頭さん」

“…Um, Kyotou-san”

「なんだよ」

“What is it?”

「今……めっちゃカッコよかったです」

“Just now… you were super cool.”

「……は？」

“…Huh?”

「僕、あれ見て決めました。来年は絶対巨頭さんみたいになりたいです！」

“I decided after seeing that. Next year, I’m definitely going to become like Kyotou-san!”

巨頭はしばらく無言だった。

Kyotou was silent for a while.

そして、ため息混じりに言った。

Then, with a sigh, it said:

「バカかお前……巨頭になると変態できなくなるんだぞ」

“You idiot… if you become a giant head, you won’t be able to metamorphose, you know.”

「え、でも……変態しなくてもいいじゃないですか！　ずっと水の中で最強でいられるなら！」

“Eh, but… isn’t it fine if you don’t metamorphose? If you can stay the strongest in the water forever!”

「……」

“…”

巨頭は初めて、自分の生き方を肯定されたような気がした。

For the first time, Kyotou felt like its way of life had been affirmed.

ちょっとだけ、胸の奥がむずむずした。

Just a little, something tickled deep in its chest.

「まぁ……好きにしろよ」

“Well… do whatever you want.”

「はいっ！　がんばります！」

“Yes! I’ll do my best!”

1年生は目を輝かせて泳ぎ去っていった。

The first-year swam away with shining eyes.

巨頭はもう一度、大きくため息をついた。

Kyotou let out another big sigh.

「オレさ……本当にこのままでいいのかな」

“Me… is it really okay to stay like this?”

その夜、満月の光が池に差し込む頃。

That night, when the full moon’s light shone into the pond.

巨頭は水面に浮かんで、空を見上げていた。

Kyotou floated on the surface, looking up at the sky.

「変態ってさ……陸に上がって、森の中をトコトコ歩いて、ミミズ食って、雨の日に恋人探して……

“Metamorphosis, you know… going up on land, walking slowly through the forest, eating earthworms, looking for a partner on rainy days…

そういうの、ちょっと憧れるんだよな」

I kinda admire that kind of thing.”

でも、頭はまだデカい。

But its head was still huge.

えらはまだ動いている。

Its gills were still moving.

尻尾はまだ透き通っている。

Its tail was still transparent.

「……ま、来年こそは」

“…Well, next year for sure.”

巨頭はそう呟いて、ゆっくりと水底に沈んでいった。

Kyotou muttered that and slowly sank back to the bottom.

翌朝、池のほとりにやってきたキツネが、水面を覗き込んで言った。

The next morning, a fox that came to the pond’s edge peered into the water and said:

「ん？　なんかデカいオタマジャクシが寝言言ってるぞ」

“Hm? There’s a huge tadpole talking in its sleep.”

巨頭の寝言だった。

It was Kyotou’s sleep-talking.

「来年こそ……変態……ミミズ……彼女……」

“Next year for sure… metamorphose… earthworms… girlfriend…”

キツネはクスクス笑って、そのまま森に消えていった。

The fox chuckled and disappeared back into the forest.

そして巨頭は、また今年も

And so Kyotou, once again this year,

「永久来年組」の王様として、池の底で堂々と居座り続けるのであった。

continued to reign proudly at the bottom of the pond as the king of the “permanent next year group.”

エゾサンショウウオ（学名：Hynobius retardatus）

北海道だけに生息する日本固有種のサンショウウオで、とても面白い特徴をたくさん持っています！

基本的な特徴

大きさ：成体の全長は約15〜20cm程度（尾がかなり長い）
体色：全体的に茶褐色〜黒褐色で、個体によっては金色や黄色の小さな斑点が散らばっているものもいる
体型：胴は比較的太めで頑丈、四肢は長めで前後肢を体側に沿わせると重なり合うくらい。尾がとても長く、体全体の半分以上を占める
肋条：背面に11本（サンショウウオの仲間では標準的）

とてもユニークな生態的特徴

エゾサンショウウオは世界的に見ても珍しい性質を持っています。

ネオテニー（幼形成熟）
通常のサンショウウオは幼生（オタマジャクシ）から変態して陸上生活に移行しますが、エゾサンショウウオは条件によっては幼生の姿のまま性的に成熟することがあります（特に倶多楽湖などの特定の環境で報告されている）。これは世界的に見ても非常に珍しい適応です！
幼生の「頭でっかち（巨頭化）」と共食い
同じ池にたくさん幼生がいる場合、一部の個体が共食いをして成長を早め、**頭が異常に大きくなる「巨頭型（broad-headed morph）」**に変化することが知られています。これはエゾアカガエルの幼生などを捕食しやすくするための適応と考えられています。
低温への適応
北海道の高地など水温が低い場所では、ふ化した年に変態せず、翌年まで幼生のまま過ごす個体もいます。寒冷地ならではの柔軟な生活史です。
