ヒョウ柄の秘密 - living things

2025年に新種として記載されたばかりの『ヒガシニホンアマガエル』が主人公の、ほのぼのファンタジー短編。

身近なカエルが実は500万年以上の歴史を持つ“東日本の仲間”だったなんて、

ちょっと誇らしい気持ちになりますよね。

レオとミドリの小さな冒険（？）をお楽しみください！

春の雨が降り始めた夕暮れ、札幌の古い公園の桜の木の下で、レオは目を覚ました。
One spring evening as rain began to fall, Leo woke up under a cherry tree in an old park in Sapporo.

レオの本名は「ヒガシニホンアマガエル」。

Leo’s real name was “Higashi-Nihon Amagaeru” (Eastern Japanese Tree Frog).

学名はDryophytes leopardus。
Its scientific name is Dryophytes leopardus.

去年の2月、遠い大学の研究者たちが「君たちは新しい種だ」と発表してくれたばかりの、カエル界の新人だ。
Just last February, researchers from a distant university announced, “You are a new species,” making him a newcomer in the frog world.

体長は3センチちょっと。

He was just over 3 cm long.

鮮やかな黄緑の背中には、雨が降ると少しずつ灰褐色が混じり、保護色になる。
His bright yellow-green back gradually turned grayish-brown when it rained, providing camouflage.

鼻から目にかけての黒い帯はシャープで、指先の吸盤はコンクリートの壁だって登れる。
A sharp black stripe ran from his nose across his eyes, and the suction pads on his fingertips allowed him to climb even concrete walls.

でも、何よりの自慢は、後ろ足の太ももの裏側に広がる、白と黒のまだら模様――ヒョウ柄だ。
But his greatest pride was the white-and-black leopard-like spots on the underside of his hind legs’ thighs.

「これが僕の証だよ」レオはいつもそう思って、木の葉の上で胸を張る。
“This is my proof,” Leo always thought, puffing out his chest on a leaf.

でも、周りの古株のカエルたちは「また鳴いてるよ、あの新入り」と笑うだけだった。
Yet the older frogs around him just laughed, saying, “There goes the newcomer croaking again.”

だって、昔からここにいるカエルたちはみんな「ニホンアマガエル」って呼ばれてきた。
After all, the frogs who had lived here for ages had always been called “Nihon Amagaeru” (Japanese Tree Frog).

東も西も同じ種だって、誰も疑わなかった。

No one had ever doubted that eastern and western ones were the same species.

レオみたいなヒョウ柄の太ももを持つやつは、ちょっと珍しい個体差扱いだったんだ。
Those with leopard spots like Leo were treated merely as rare variations.

レオの住む公園は、北海道の街の端っこ。

The park where Leo lived was on the edge of a city in Hokkaido.

夏になると子供たちが虫取り網を持って来て、秋には落ち葉が積もり、冬は雪の下でじっと眠る。
In summer children came with insect nets, in autumn fallen leaves piled up, and in winter he slept quietly under the snow.

でも今年は違った。

But this year was different.

研究者の発表以来、公園に変な人間が増えた。
Since the researchers’ announcement, strange humans had started coming to the park.

カメラを持った大人たちが「ヒガシニホンアマガエルを探してるんです」と言いながら、草むらを覗き込む。
Adults with cameras peered into the grass, saying, “We’re looking for Higashi-Nihon Amagaeru.”

「新種だって！太もものヒョウ柄が目印なんだって！」

“It’s a new species! The leopard pattern on the thighs is the key sign!”

そんな声が聞こえるたび、レオは木の高い枝に隠れた。
Every time he heard such voices, Leo hid high up in the branches.

「僕が新種？でも、僕はずっとここにいたのに……」
“Me, a new species? But I’ve always been right here…”

ある雨の夜、レオはいつものように「クワッ、クワッ」と鳴いていた。
One rainy night, Leo was croaking as usual: “Kwa, kwa.”

すると、近くの池から小さな声が返ってきた。「クワ……クワ……」
Then a small voice answered from nearby pond: “Kwa… kwa…”

声の主は、若いメスのカエルだった。名前はミドリ。

The owner of the voice was a young female frog named Midori.

彼女の太ももにも、薄いけど確かにヒョウ柄があった。
She too had faint but unmistakable leopard spots on her thighs.

「君も……新種？」レオが尋ねると、ミドリは恥ずかしそうに頷いた。
“You too… a new species?” When Leo asked, Midori nodded shyly.

「私、今年変態したばかりで……。

“I just metamorphosed this year…

お母さんたちは『ニホンアマガエル』だって言ってたけど、最近みんなが『ヒガシニホン』って呼ぶようになって……。

My mom called us Nihon Amagaeru, but lately everyone calls us Higashi-Nihon…

なんか、急に別物になったみたいで怖いよ」
It feels scary, like we suddenly became something else.”

二匹は池の縁のススキに並んで座った。

The two sat side by side on the pampas grass by the pond’s edge.

雨粒がぽつぽつと体を叩く。
Raindrops pattered gently on their bodies.

レオは初めて、自分の太ももをじっくり見せた。

For the first time, Leo carefully showed her his thighs.

白い斑点が黒い背景に浮かんで、本当に小さなヒョウのようだ。
White spots floated against a black background, truly resembling tiny leopards.

「これが、僕たちの証だってさ。500万年以上前に、西の仲間と分かれた証だって。研究者たちはそう言ってる」
“They say this is our proof. Proof that we diverged from the western frogs more than 5 million years ago. That’s what the researchers say.”

ミドリは目を丸くした。

Midori’s eyes widened.

「500万年……？私たち、まだ生まれて1年も経ってないのに、そんな昔の話？」
“5 million years…? We haven’t even lived for one year, and it’s a story from that long ago?”

レオは苦笑した。

Leo gave a wry smile.

「僕もよくわからない。でもさ、考えてみれば、僕たちはいつもここにいた。北海道の雪の下で、札幌の街灯の下で、コンクリートの壁を登って。」
“I don’t fully understand it either. But think about it—we’ve always been here. Under the snow in Hokkaido, beneath the streetlights in Sapporo, climbing concrete walls.”

「西の連中とは会ったこともない。

“We’ve never even met the western ones.

遺伝子が違うって言われても、別に驚かないよ。

So even if they say our genes are different, I’m not really surprised.

僕たちは、僕たちなんだから」
We are who we are.”

その時、池の向こうから大きな声が響いた。「クワックワックワッ！」
At that moment, a loud voice boomed from across the pond. “Kwa-kwa-kwa-kwa!”

古株のオス、カエル界の長老格のクロだった。

It was Kuro, an elder male frog.

体は少し大きく、太ももはほぼ真っ黒で模様が薄い。昔ながらの「ニホンアマガエル」タイプだ。
His body was a bit larger, his thighs almost solid black with faint patterns—an old-fashioned “Nihon Amagaeru” type.

「お前ら、新入りどもが騒がしいぞ！

“You newcomers are making too much noise!

新種だのなんだの、うるせえ！

New species this, new species that—shut up!

俺たちは昔からここで鳴いて、産卵して、オタマジャクシを育ててきたんだ。」
We’ve been croaking here, laying eggs, and raising tadpoles since forever.”

「名前が変わったくらいで、何が変わるってんだ！」
“What’s gonna change just because the name changed!”

レオは少し怖かったけど、吸盤を木の幹に押しつけて立ち上がった。
Leo felt a little scared, but he pressed his suction pads against the tree trunk and stood up.

「変わらないよ、長老。でも……変わったこともある。

“Nothing changes, Elder. But… something has changed too.

僕たちは、もう『ただのアマガエル』じゃない。『ヒガシニホンアマガエル』なんだ。」
We’re no longer just ‘regular tree frogs.’ We’re Higashi-Nihon Amagaeru.”

「東日本の、ヒョウ柄の仲間なんだ」
“The leopard-spotted friends of eastern Japan.”

クロは鼻を鳴らした。

Kuro snorted.

「ふん。名前なんて人間の勝手な呼び方だ。雨が降れば鳴く。

“Hmph. Names are just humans’ arbitrary labels. When it rains we croak.

虫が飛べば食べる。子ガエルが生まれれば守る。それでいいじゃねえか」
When bugs fly we eat. When tadpoles are born we protect them. That’s all that matters, isn’t it?”

ミドリがそっとレオの横に寄った。

Midori quietly moved closer to Leo.

「でも……私、嬉しいよ。自分の名前がちゃんとあるって。

“But… I’m happy. To have our own proper name.

『ヒガシニホンアマガエル』って。なんか、特別な感じがする」
‘Higashi-Nihon Amagaeru.’ It feels somehow special.”

レオは頷いた。「そうだね。僕たちは、500万年もかけて、ここだけの形になった。西の仲間とは違う道を歩いてきたんだ。」
Leo nodded. “Yeah. We took 5 million years to become this shape, unique to here. We walked a different path from the western frogs.”

「それを、ようやく人間が気づいてくれた。それって、悪くないよね」
“And finally, humans noticed. That’s not so bad, right?”

雨が強くなった。雷が遠くで鳴り、二匹は一緒に大きな声を出した。

The rain grew heavier. Thunder rumbled in the distance, and the two raised their voices together.

「クワッ！クワッ！クワックワックワッ！」
“Kwa! Kwa! Kwa-kwa-kwa-kwa!”

その声は、公園のあちこちから返ってきた。

Their calls were answered from all over the park.

ヒョウ柄の若者たちも、模様の薄い古株たちも、みんな一緒に鳴いていた。
Young ones with leopard spots, old ones with faint patterns—everyone croaked together.

新種だろうが古株だろうが、雨の前の夜は、みんな同じ歌を歌う。
New species or old stock, on the night before rain, everyone sings the same song.

翌朝、雨が上がると、レオとミドリは桜の木の高い枝に登った。

The next morning, after the rain stopped, Leo and Midori climbed high into the cherry tree.

朝日が葉を透かして、二人を優しく照らす。
Sunlight filtered through the leaves, gently illuminating them.

レオの太もものヒョウ柄が、きらきらと光った。
Leo’s leopard spots on his thighs sparkled in the light.

「これからも、僕たちはここで生きていくよ。新種として、ちゃんと」
“From now on, we’ll keep living here. Properly, as a new species.”

ミドリが微笑んだ。「うん。一緒に鳴いて、一緒に登って、一緒に子ガエルを育てよう」
Midori smiled. “Yes. Let’s croak together, climb together, and raise tadpoles together.”

遠くで、子供の声が聞こえた。

In the distance, a child’s voice rang out.

「見て！あのカエル、太ももにヒョウ柄がある！ヒガシニホンアマガエルだ！」
“Look! That frog has leopard spots on its thighs! It’s a Higashi-Nihon Amagaeru!”

レオは小さく胸を張った。そうだよ。

Leo quietly puffed out his chest. That’s right.

僕たちは、2025年に生まれた新種。でも、ずっと前から、ここにいたんだ。
We were born as a new species in 2025. But we’ve been here all along.

ヒガシニホンアマガエル（東日本雨蛙、学名：Dryophytes leopardus）

2025年に新種として記載されたばかりの小型のカエルで、これまで「ニホンアマガエル」として一括りにされていた東日本側の集団です。ニホンアマガエル（Dryophytes japonicus）と非常に似ていますが、遺伝子解析と形態の違いから別種と認められました。

基本的な外見

体長：オス約2.5～3.5cm、メス約2.7～4.2cm（メスの方がやや大きい傾向）
体色：背中側は黄緑色が基本ですが、環境（温度・湿度・背景・明るさ）に応じて灰褐色・茶色・まだらなどに変化する保護色が有名
特徴的な模様：鼻先から目・耳にかけて黒褐色の太い帯（側頭線）がはっきり通っている
腹側：白っぽい～淡黄色
指先：丸い吸盤が発達していて、木の幹・葉・ガラス・壁など垂直面にへばりついて移動可能
最大の識別ポイント：後肢の大腿部（太もも）の裏側に、白と黒のヒョウ柄のようなまだら模様（白い斑点や黒い斑紋）が出やすい。これが種小名「leopardus」（ヒョウの意味）の由来です。ただし、個体差があり、模様が薄い・ない個体もいます。模様だけで100%判別できるわけではなく、特に分布境界付近では注意が必要です。
