海の黒い矢 ― ウミウのクロウ - living things

荒々しい日本海の岩礁で、一羽の若いウミウ「クロウ」が孤独から群れの温かさを知るまでの小さな冒険物語。

日本海に面した荒々しい岩礁の島。

An island of rugged reefs facing the Sea of Japan.
波が砕け、白い泡が絶え間なく舞うその場所に、黒い影が一羽、岩のてっぺんに立っていた。
At the place where waves break and white foam dances endlessly, a single black shadow stood atop a rock.

名前はクロウ。まだ若いウミウだ。
His name was Krow. He was still a young cormorant.

体長は90センチほど。
His body length was about 90 centimeters.

全身を覆う羽は、光の加減で深緑に輝き、喉の黄色い部分が鋭く目立つ。
The feathers covering his entire body shone deep green depending on the light, and the yellow part of his throat stood out sharply.

生まれたのは去年の春。
He was born in the spring of last year.

親鳥が岩の隙間に作った巣で、3羽の兄弟とともに育った。
He grew up in a nest built by his parents in a crevice of the rock, together with three siblings.

だが、嵐の夜に巣が崩れ、兄弟は海に落ち、クロウだけが奇跡的に生き残った。
However, on a stormy night the nest collapsed, his siblings fell into the sea, and only Krow miraculously survived.

それ以来、クロウは一人で生きてきた。

Since then, Krow had lived alone.
朝が来るたび、岩の上に翼を大きく広げて乾かす。
Every morning, he spread his wings wide on the rock to dry them.

羽が水を弾かないから、潜水のあと必ずこうして体を乾かさなければならない。
Because his feathers do not repel water, he must always dry his body like this after diving.

風が冷たく吹き抜けても、じっと耐える。
Even when the cold wind blows through, he endures it silently.

それがウミウの掟だ。
That is the rule of cormorants.

「今日も、腹が減った……」
“Today, too, I’m hungry…”

クロウは低い声で呟く。

Krow muttered in a low voice.
ウミウの鳴き声は「グワッ」「ゴロゴロ」と低く響く。
The call of cormorants echoes low as “Gwa” or “Goro-goro.”

言葉ではない。

It is not words.
ただ、胸の奥で渦巻く空腹と孤独を吐き出すだけだ。
It is merely an expression of the hunger and loneliness swirling deep in his chest.

島の周りは豊かな漁場だった。

The waters around the island were rich fishing grounds.
アジ、サバ、イカナゴ。時には大きなブリの群れさえ通る。
Horse mackerel, mackerel, sardine sprats. Sometimes even large schools of yellowtail passed through.

だが、クロウはまだ上手く群れを追えなかった。
However, Krow could not yet chase schools well.

潜水は得意だ。
He was skilled at diving.

10メートル、15メートル、時には20メートル以上潜って、魚を追う。
He dives 10 meters, 15 meters, sometimes more than 20 meters to pursue fish.

くちばしを矢のように突き刺し、鰓蓋を押さえて飲み込む。
He thrusts his beak like an arrow, holds the gills, and swallows.

だが、いつも最後の最後で逃げられる。
But he was always escaped at the very last moment.

群れの先頭を獲る速さも、仲間と協力して追い込む知恵も、まだ足りなかった。
He still lacked the speed to catch the lead of the school and the wisdom to cooperate with others to corner them.

ある朝、クロウは決意した。
One morning, Krow made up his mind.

「今日は沖へ出る。島の近くだけじゃ、いつまで経っても一人前になれない」
“Today I will go out to the open sea. If I stay only near the island, I’ll never become fully grown.”

普段は島から500メートルも離れない。
Usually he doesn’t go more than 500 meters from the island.

だが今日は違う。
But today was different.

水平線の方へ、風に逆らって飛ぶ。

He flies toward the horizon, against the wind.
翼を烈しく羽ばたかせ、首を長く前に伸ばして。
Flapping his wings fiercely, stretching his long neck forward.

ウミウの飛翔は優雅ではない。
The flight of a cormorant is not graceful.

重く、力強い。
It is heavy and powerful.

まるで黒い矢が空を裂くようだ。
It was as if a black arrow tore through the sky.

1時間ほど飛んだところで、海面が変わった。
After flying for about an hour, the sea surface changed.

波が細かく、青が深くなった。
The waves became finer, and the blue grew deeper.

遠くに白い鳥の群れが見える。
A flock of white birds could be seen in the distance.

アホウドリではない。

Not albatrosses.
カツオドリだ。
They were boobies.

彼らは上空から急降下して魚を突く。
They dive from the sky to spear fish.

クロウは彼らを羨ましく思った。
Krow envied them.

自分は潜るしかない。

He can only dive.
空から獲物を狙う優雅さはない。
He lacks the elegance of targeting prey from the air.

すると、海面がざわついた。
Then, the sea surface began to stir.

小さな波がいくつも跳ね、銀色の閃光が無数に走る。
Small waves leaped up repeatedly, and countless silver flashes darted across the water.

イワシの大群だ。
It was a massive school of sardines.

数万、いや数十万匹。
Tens of thousands, no, hundreds of thousands.

海が生き物のようにうねっている。
The sea undulated like a living creature.

クロウは迷わず急降下した。
Krow dove without hesitation.

海面に体を叩きつけるように飛び込み、水中へ。
He plunged into the sea surface as if slamming his body down, entering the water.

視界が青く変わる。
His vision turned blue.

第三のまぶたが目を守り、水の抵抗を減らす。
The nictitating membrane protects his eyes and reduces water resistance.

足の水かきを大きく広げ、推進力を得る。
He spreads his webbed feet wide to gain propulsion.

イワシは慌てて散らばるが、クロウは執拗に追う。
The sardines scatter in panic, but Krow pursues relentlessly.

右へ、左へ、急旋回。
Right, left, sharp turns.

魚の群れの端を切り取るように泳ぐ。
He swims as if slicing off the edge of the school.

ようやく一匹をくわえた瞬間、後ろから別の影が迫ってきた。
The moment he finally caught one in his beak, another shadow approached from behind.

―― ヒメウだ。
―― It was a pelagic cormorant.

体はクロウより一回り小さいが、動きは素早い。
Its body was a size smaller than Krow's, but its movements were quick.

ヒメウはクロウの獲物を狙って横から突っ込んできた。
The pelagic cormorant charged from the side, aiming for Krow's catch.

クロウは反射的に体を捻り、くちばしで威嚇する。
Krow twisted his body reflexively and threatened with his beak.

「グワァッ！」

“Gwaa!”
二羽は水中ですれ違い、互いに睨み合う。
The two passed each other underwater, glaring at one another.

だが、ヒメウはすぐに諦めて別の方向へ泳ぎ去った。
But the pelagic cormorant soon gave up and swam away in another direction.

クロウはほっと息をつき―― いや、水中だから息はできない。
Krow let out a relieved breath — no, he couldn't breathe underwater.

ただ、心臓が激しく鳴るのを感じた。
He simply felt his heart pounding fiercely.

イワシを一匹飲み込み、浮上する。
He swallowed the one sardine and surfaced.

海面に出ると、翼を広げて浮かぶ。
Emerging on the surface, he spread his wings and floated.

息を整えながら、再び潜る。
While catching his breath, he dove again.

今度は二匹、三匹。
This time, two, then three.

胃が膨らむまで食べ続けた。
He kept eating until his stomach swelled.

久しぶりの満腹感。
A long-awaited feeling of fullness.

体が温かくなる。
His body warmed up.

だが、満足したのも束の間。
But the satisfaction was short-lived.

遠くから低い唸り声が聞こえた。
A low growl came from afar.

「ゴロゴロ……ゴロゴロ……」
“Goro… goro…”

見ると、岩礁の影から大きなウミウが現れた。
Looking over, a large cormorant emerged from the shadow of the reef.

体長は1メートル近く、首の飾り羽が白く目立つ。
Its body length was nearly 1 meter, with prominent white ornamental feathers on its neck.

成鳥のオスだ。
It was an adult male.

繁殖期を終えたばかりの、威厳のある姿。
A dignified figure, fresh from the end of breeding season.

そのオスはクロウを見て、ゆっくり近づいてきた。
The male slowly approached Krow upon seeing him.

クロウは身構える。
Krow braced himself.

縄張り争いか？それとも――
A territorial dispute? Or—

オスは攻撃してこなかった。
The male did not attack.

代わりに、岩の上に止まり、翼を広げた。
Instead, it landed on a rock and spread its wings.

クロウと同じポーズ。
The same pose as Krow.

乾かす仕草だ。
The gesture of drying.

すると、オスは低く鳴いた。

Then, the male called lowly.
「ゴロ……ここに来い」
“Goro… come here.”

クロウは驚いた。
Krow was surprised.

言葉ではない。でも、意味が伝わってきた。
It was not words. But the meaning came through.

オスは自分の岩の隣を、くちばしで軽く叩いた。
The male lightly tapped the rock next to his own with his beak.

そこには、もう一羽の若いウミウがいた。
There was another young cormorant there.

メスだ。
It was a female.

クロウより少し小さい。
A little smaller than Krow.

羽の光沢が柔らかく、まだ経験の浅そうな目をしている。
Her feather sheen was soft, and her eyes looked inexperienced.

オスは二羽を見比べ、満足げに首を振った。
The male looked back and forth between the two and nodded his head in satisfaction.

まるで「仲間になれ」と言っているようだった。
It was as if he were saying, “Become companions.”

クロウは迷った。
Krow hesitated.

一人で生きてきた。
He had lived alone.

誰にも頼らず、誰にも邪魔されず。
Never relying on anyone, never being disturbed by anyone.

だが、この満腹感、この安心感……。
But this feeling of fullness, this sense of security…

群れの温かさを知らなかった体が、初めてそれを欲している。
His body, which had never known the warmth of a flock, desired it for the first time.

夕陽が海を赤く染める頃、クロウはゆっくりとオスの隣の岩に降り立った。
As the sunset dyed the sea red, Krow slowly landed on the rock next to the male.

メスがそっと近づき、首をすり寄せてくる。
The female approached gently and rubbed her neck against him.

クロウは反射的に避けそうになったが、思いとどまった。
Krow almost reflexively pulled away, but he held back.

三羽は並んで翼を広げた。
The three spread their wings side by side.

風が吹き、羽が乾いていく。
The wind blew, drying their feathers.

黒い体が、夕陽を受けて金色に輝く。
Their black bodies shone golden in the sunset.

その夜、クロウは初めて、群れの中で眠った。

That night, Krow slept in a flock for the first time.
波の音が子守唄のように響く。
The sound of the waves echoed like a lullaby.

孤独だった胸の奥に、小さな温もりが灯った。
A small warmth lit up deep in his once-lonely chest.

翌朝、クロウはもう一人ではなかった。
The next morning, Krow was no longer alone.

オスに導かれ、メスと並んで海へ飛び込む。
Guided by the male, he dove into the sea side by side with the female.

三羽でイワシの群れを追い、互いに魚を分け合う。
The three chased the school of sardines together, sharing the fish among themselves.

クロウは初めて、先頭を切って潜った。
For the first time, Krow took the lead and dove.

矢のように速く、確実に獲物を捉える。
Fast as an arrow, he caught prey with certainty.

「これが、生きるってことか……」
“This is what it means to live…”

クロウは思った。
Krow thought.

海は広い。

The sea is vast.
敵も多い。嵐も来る。
There are many enemies. Storms will come.

だが、一人より三人。

But three are better than one.
黒い矢は、三本になって空と海を裂いていく。
The black arrows became three, tearing through sky and sea.

岩の上に立つ三羽のウミウ。

Three cormorants standing on the rock.
翼を広げ、風を受けながら、次の狩りへ向かう準備をする。
Spreading their wings, receiving the wind, preparing for the next hunt.

彼らの物語は、まだ始まったばかりだった。

Their story had only just begun.

鵜（ウ）

日本でよく見られるのは主にカワウとウミウの2種で、どちらも非常に似ていますが、少し違いがあります。

鵜全体の共通した特徴

外見：全身が黒っぽい（光沢のある黒や緑がかった黒）。首が長く、くちばしが長くて先がかぎ状になっている。
足：**全蹼（ぜんぼく）**といって、4本の指すべてに水かきがついている（カモより1枚多い）。
潜水能力：非常に優れていて、水中に10～20m以上潜ることもあり、1分近く潜水できる種もいる。魚を追って素早く泳ぐ。
羽の特性：羽が水をあまり弾かないため、潜水後に翼を広げて干す姿がよく見られる（これが鵜のとても特徴的な行動）。
視力：「鵜の目鷹の目」ということわざの通り、非常に鋭い視力を持ち、水中でも魚をはっきり見ることができる。第三のまぶた（瞬膜）で目を保護。
食性：ほぼ100%魚食性。1羽で1日400～600gくらいの魚を食べる。
行動：群れで行動することが多く、ねぐらや繁殖地では数十～数百羽が集まるコロニーを作る。
日本での利用：岐阜の長良川鵜飼などで使われるのは主にウミウ（人に懐きやすく、扱いやすい）。
