虚空の盗賊、デメニギス - living things

深海に潜む不思議な生き物「デメニギス」。

透明な頭と回転する樽眼を持つこの小さな魚が、実は宇宙の記憶を運ぶ旅人だったら……？

生態をベースにした、深海の神秘と宇宙のロマンのファンタジーSF短編。

深さ七百メートル。光が完全に飲み込まれる境界線を越えた、そこは永遠の青黒い宇宙だった。
At a depth of seven hundred meters, beyond the boundary where light is completely swallowed, there was an eternal deep blue-black universe.

星の瞬きすら届かないこの場所で、ただ一つの微かな光源が存在した。
In this place where even the twinkling of stars cannot reach, there was only one faint light source.

それは、上方から降り注ぐ、ほとんど粒子に近い青白い残光だった。
It was a pale bluish afterglow, almost like particles, trickling down from above.

その残光を浴びて、ゆっくりと浮遊する影があった。
Basking in that afterglow, a shadow drifted slowly.

体長十五センチほどの小さな魚。

A small fish about fifteen centimeters long.

体は漆黒で、尾びれだけが淡い青白く透けている。
Its body was jet black, with only the tail fin faintly translucent in pale blue-white.

だが、最も異様なのは頭部だった。
But the most bizarre part was its head.

半球状の透明なドーム。

A hemispherical transparent dome.

まるで宇宙船のコックピットのように、内部に液体が満たされ、緑色の二つの球体が静かに輝いている。
Like the cockpit of a spaceship, filled with liquid inside, two green spheres quietly glowing.

それが、デメニギスだった。
That was Demenigis.

深海の住人たちは彼をそう呼んだ。「虚空の盗賊」。
The inhabitants of the deep sea called him that: “The Thief of the Void.”

デメニギスは泳がない。泳ぐ必要がない。
Demenigis does not swim. There is no need to swim.

大きな腹びれを微かに動かすだけで、まるで無重力空間を漂う衛星のように、静止したまま浮かぶ。
By merely moving its large ventral fins slightly, it hovers motionless, like a satellite drifting in zero gravity.

目は常に真上を向いている。緑の樽眼は、光を極限まで集めるレンズ。
Its eyes always face straight upward. The green barrel eyes are lenses that gather even the faintest light to the extreme.

わずかな残光さえ逃さない。
Not even the slightest afterglow escapes them.

今日も、デメニギスは虚空を見上げていた。
Today too, Demenigis was gazing into the void above.

やがて、巨大な影がゆっくりと降りてきた。クダクラゲ。
Eventually, a huge shadow slowly descended. A siphonophore.

長い触手が無数に伸び、毒の棘をまとった傘のような体。
Long tentacles stretched out in countless numbers, an umbrella-like body covered in poisonous barbs.

その触手の間に、小さな粒子のようなものが絡まっている。
Between those tentacles, small particle-like things were entangled.

クダクラゲはそれらを「捕らえた」つもりでいる。だが、デメニギスにとっては、ただの「落とし物」だった。
The siphonophore thinks it has “captured” them. But to Demenigis, they were merely “dropped items.”

彼は動いた。腹びれを軽く振る。
He moved. A light flick of the ventral fins.

体がわずかに傾き、クダクラゲの触手の下に滑り込む。
His body tilts slightly and slips under the siphonophore’s tentacles.

触手は彼に気づかない。透明なドームが、棘の雨を完璧に防ぐ。
The tentacles do not notice him. The transparent dome perfectly blocks the rain of barbs.

緑の眼が、初めて動いた。筒状の眼球が、ゆっくりと前方へ倒れる。
The green eyes moved for the first time. The tubular eyeballs slowly tilt forward.

まるで宇宙船の照準装置がロックオンするように。
As if a spaceship’s targeting system has locked on.

口が開き、素早く、正確に。絡まった小魚の欠片を一瞬で奪い取る。
The mouth opens—swiftly, precisely—snatching the entangled piece of small fish in an instant.

クダクラゲは気づいた時には、もう遅い。
By the time the siphonophore notices, it is already too late.

だが、この夜はいつもと違った。
But this night was different from usual.

クダクラゲの群れが、いつもより低く、ゆっくりと降りてきた。
The school of siphonophores descended lower and more slowly than usual.

その中心に、何かがいた。光っていた。
At its center, something was there. It was glowing.

生物発光ではない。まるで……星の欠片のような、純粋な銀色の輝き。
Not bioluminescence. It was a pure silver glow, like a fragment of a star.

それは、小さな球体だった。直径三センチほど。
It was a small sphere, about three centimeters in diameter.

デメニギスは初めて「知らないもの」を見た。
Demenigis saw something “unknown” for the first time.

銀色の球体が、突然光を放った。眩い閃光。
The silver sphere suddenly emitted light. A dazzling flash.

深海ではありえないほどの明るさ。デメニギスの緑の眼が、一瞬、真っ白になった。
A brightness impossible in the deep sea. Demenigis’s green eyes turned pure white for a moment.

だが、彼は逃げなかった。代わりに、もっと近づいた。
But he did not flee. Instead, he drew even closer.

光が収まると、球体は開いていた。
When the light faded, the sphere had opened.

内部から、細い銀色の糸が伸び、デメニギスの透明ドームに触れた。
From inside, thin silver threads extended and touched Demenigis’s transparent dome.

触れた瞬間、彼の頭の中に、何かが流れ込んできた。映像だった。
The moment they touched, something flowed into his mind. It was images.

果てしない星の海。青い惑星。光の帯。
An endless sea of stars. A blue planet. Bands of light.

そして、無数の同じような魚たちが、銀色の球体を運んでいる姿。
And countless similar fish carrying silver spheres.

彼らは「運び屋」だった。宇宙の記憶を、深海の底まで運ぶ使者。
They were “carriers.” Messengers who transport the memory of the universe to the bottom of the deep sea.

デメニギスは、自分がその末裔であることを知った。
Demenigis learned that he was one of their descendants.

銀色の糸が、優しく彼の脳に語りかける。
The silver threads gently spoke to his mind.

「お前は、忘れられた航路の守り手だ。この深海は、宇宙と海が交わる最後の関門。」
“You are the guardian of a forgotten route. This deep sea is the final gateway where cosmos and ocean meet.”

「光を失った世界で、記憶を運び続ける。それがお前の役目だ。」
“In a world that has lost light, continue carrying memory. That is your role.”

デメニギスは、初めて自分の存在に意味を見出した。
For the first time, Demenigis found meaning in his own existence.

これまでただの盗賊だった自分が、実は宇宙の郵便配達員だったなんて。
The one who had been nothing but a thief was actually a cosmic postman.

銀色の球体は、最後の光を放つと、ゆっくりと溶け始めた。
After emitting its final light, the silver sphere slowly began to melt.

記憶はすべて、彼の中に移された。
All the memories were transferred into him.

デメニギスは、再び虚空を見上げた。
Demenigis looked up into the void once more.

今度は、ただ獲物を探すためではない。
This time, not merely to search for prey.

星の記憶を、誰かに届けるために。
But to deliver the memory of the stars to someone.

いつか、光が再び深海に届く日まで。
Until the day light returns to the deep sea once again.

あるいは、深海から宇宙へ帰る日まで。
Or until the day he returns from the deep sea to the cosmos.

デメニギスは漂い続ける。透明なコックピットの中で、緑の眼を輝かせながら。
Demenigis continues to drift. Inside his transparent cockpit, his green eyes shining.

深海の盗賊は、今、宇宙の旅人になった。
The Thief of the Deep Sea has now become a traveler of the cosmos.

デメニギス（学名：Macropinna microstoma）

深海に住む非常にユニークな魚で、「出目似鱚」とも書かれます。

世界でもっとも奇妙な見た目の深海魚の一つとして有名です。

透明な頭部
頭全体がドーム状の透明な膜で覆われており、中が液体で満たされています。このため、脳や目などの内部が透けて見える非常に珍しい構造です。（標本では壊れやすいため、長年この特徴が確認できなかった）
筒状（管状）の目（樽眼 / barrel eye）
緑色がかった球状の目が、望遠鏡や樽のように筒状に前方・上方に突き出しています。通常は真上を向いていて、上方から降り注ぐわずかな光で獲物のシルエットや影を捉えます。
獲物を見つけたときは眼球を回転させて前方に倒し、狙いを定めて捕食します。
目の位置のトリック
口のすぐ上に黒い丸い部分がありますが、これは目ではなく鼻孔（ナーレ）です。本当の目はもっと後ろの透明な頭の中にあります。
体長・生息域
体長は約15cm程度と小型。
主に北太平洋（日本近海では岩手県以北の沖合）の水深400〜800mくらいの中層に漂うように生息しています。
生態・習性
あまり積極的に泳がず、大きな腹びれを使ってホバリング（浮遊）しながら省エネ生活を送ります。
主食は小魚、クラゲ類、動物プランクトンなど。
クダクラゲなどが捕まえた獲物を横取りする「深海の盗賊」とも呼ばれることがあります。
