知床の森に棲む世界最大級のフクロウ「シマフクロウ（コタンコロカムイ）」
アイヌの守護神のイメージと、自然への感謝をテーマに綴った短編物語。
遠い昔、知床の深い森の奥に、一羽の大きなシマフクロウが棲んでいた。
Long ago, in the depths of the ancient forest of Shiretoko, there lived a great Blakiston's fish owl.
その名を「ホウホウエカシ」と村の者たちは呼んだ。
The villagers called him “Hōhō Ekashi.”
体は灰褐色の縞模様に覆われ、翼を広げれば二メートル近くにもなる。
His body was covered in gray-brown stripes, and when he spread his wings, they reached nearly two meters across.
黄金色の大きな瞳は夜の闇を貫き、耳羽はまるで古い賢者の冠のようにそそり立っていた。
His large golden eyes pierced the darkness of night, and his ear tufts stood tall like the crown of an ancient sage.
アイヌの民は彼を「コタンコロカムイ」――村を守る神――と崇め、決して害を加えなかった。
The Ainu people revered him as “Kotan Kor Kamuy”—the god who protects the village—and never harmed him.
むしろ、川辺で魚を捕る姿を見守り、低く響く「ヴォー、ヴォー」という声に耳を傾けた。
Instead, they watched over him as he caught fish by the river and listened carefully to his deep, resonant “Vō… Vō…” calls.
それは、神々が人間に語りかける合図だと信じられていた。
They believed it was a sign that the gods were speaking to humans.
村の少年、シロクは十五になったばかりだった。
In the village lived a boy named Shiroku, who had just turned fifteen.
父は猟師、母は木の実を採る女。
His father was a hunter, and his mother gathered wild nuts and berries.
シロク自身も弓を手に森へ入るようになったが、まだ獲物を仕留めたことはなかった。
Shiroku had begun entering the forest with a bow, but he had never yet taken any game.
心はいつもざわついていた。「俺は本当に村の役に立てるのだろうか」と。
His heart was always restless. “Will I truly be useful to the village?” he wondered.
ある晩、シロクは一人で川辺へ出た。
One night, Shiroku went alone to the riverside.
満月の光が水面を銀色に染め、サケが遡上する季節だった。
The full moon dyed the water surface silver; it was the season when salmon returned upstream.
ところがその年は違う。川は静かで、魚影ひとつ見えない。
But that year was different. The river was silent, with not a single fish in sight.
村ではすでに飢えの影が忍び寄っていた。
The shadow of hunger had already begun creeping into the village.
老人たちは「カムイたちが怒っているのかもしれぬ」と囁き合った。
The elders whispered among themselves, “Perhaps the kamuy are angry.”
シロクは川に膝をつき、祈った。
Shiroku knelt by the river and prayed.
「コタンコロカムイよ、どうか教えてくれ。なぜサケが来ないのか。村を飢えから救う術を教えてくれ」
“O Kotan Kor Kamuy, please tell me. Why aren’t the salmon coming? Show me how to save the village from starvation.”
すると、背後の古いカシワの木の上から、低い声が響いた。
Then, from the top of an old oak tree behind him, a low voice resounded.
「ヴォー……ヴォー……」
“Vō… Vō…”
見上げると、そこにホウホウエカシがいた。
Looking up, he saw Hōhō Ekashi perched there.
月光を浴びて、まるで銀の滴が降るように羽が輝いている。
Bathed in moonlight, his feathers shone as if silver droplets were falling.
少年は息を呑んだ。神の鳥が、こんな近くに降りてくることなど聞いたことがない。
The boy held his breath. He had never heard of the divine bird descending so close.
「人間の子よ。お前はまだ若いが、心は純粋だ。それゆえ、私の声が届いたのだろう」
“Child of man. You are still young, but your heart is pure. That is why my voice reaches you.”
シロクは驚いて後ずさった。
Shiroku stepped back in surprise.
声は頭の中に直接響くようだった。
The voice seemed to echo directly inside his head.
「私はこの森と川を見守ってきた。だが、人間たちは忘れかけている。“
I have watched over this forest and river. But humans are beginning to forget.
川を汚し、木を無闇に切り、魚に感謝を捧げなくなった。」
They pollute the river, cut trees recklessly, and no longer offer thanks to the fish.”
「だからサケのカムイは怒り、遡上を止めたのだ」
“That is why the salmon kamuy became angry and stopped their upstream journey.”
シロクはうなだれた。「俺たちのせいか……」
Shiroku bowed his head. “Is it our fault…?”
「いや、まだ間に合う。お前が橋渡しになれ」
“No, there is still time. Become the bridge between us.”
ホウホウエカシは翼を広げ、ゆっくりと舞い降りた。
Hōhō Ekashi spread his wings and slowly descended.
少年の目の前に立った姿は、まるで老いた賢者のようだった。
Standing before the boy, he looked just like an aged wise man.
「三つの試練を課そう。第一に、川の源流まで登り、水の精に詫びを入れよ。」
“I will give you three trials. First, climb to the source of the river and apologize to the water spirit.”
「第二に、村の長老たちに真実を伝えよ。第三に、私に相応しいイナウを捧げよ。」
“Second, tell the truth to the village elders. Third, offer me an inaw worthy of me.”
「それができれば、サケは再び川を登る」
“If you accomplish them, the salmon will return to the river once more.”
シロクは迷わず頷いた。「やる。村のために」
Without hesitation, Shiroku nodded. “I will do it. For the village.”
翌朝、少年は一人で山へ向かった。
The next morning, the boy set off alone toward the mountains.
源流は険しく、岩場を這い、滝をよじ登った。
The source was rugged; he crawled over rocky terrain and climbed waterfalls.
途中で足を滑らせ、膝を血だらけにしたが、諦めなかった。
He slipped along the way, bloodying his knees, but he did not give up.
ようやく辿り着いた小さな泉で、水の精――チカプカムイの娘――に祈りを捧げた。
Finally reaching a small spring, he offered prayers to the water spirit—the daughter of Chup Kamuy.
「私たちの愚かさを許してください。もう二度と川を汚しません」
“Please forgive our foolishness. We will never pollute the river again.”
泉の水が一瞬輝き、冷たい風が少年の頰を撫でた。それは許しのしるしだった。
The spring water shone for a moment, and a cold wind caressed the boy’s cheek. It was a sign of forgiveness.
村に戻ったシロクは、集会所で皆の前に立った。
Upon returning to the village, Shiroku stood before everyone in the meeting house.
震える声で、ホウホウエカシの言葉を伝えた。
With a trembling voice, he conveyed the words of Hōhō Ekashi.
「神の鳥が言いました。感謝を忘れたから、サケが来ないのです。私たちは変わらなければ」
“The divine bird said: Because we forgot to give thanks, the salmon do not come. We must change.”
長老たちは驚き、若い者たちはざわついた。
The elders were astonished, and the young people stirred uneasily.
だが、シロクの目に宿る真剣さを見て、誰も笑わなかった。
Yet, seeing the earnestness in Shiroku’s eyes, no one laughed.
翌日、村人たちは川辺に集まり、古いイナウを立て直し、魚の骨や木の皮で新しい供物を捧げた。
The next day, the villagers gathered by the river, repaired old inaw, and offered new ones made of fish bones and tree bark.
歌い、踊り、カムイたちに感謝を述べた。
They sang, danced, and expressed gratitude to the kamuy.
最後の試練の日。シロクは一人で森の奥へ入った。
On the day of the final trial, Shiroku entered deep into the forest alone.
ホウホウエカシの棲む大木の下に、白樺の皮で丁寧に削ったイナウを立て、シラカバの葉を編んだ冠を置いた。
Beneath the great tree where Hōhō Ekashi dwelled, he set up an inaw carefully carved from birch bark and placed a crown woven from birch leaves.
「コタンコロカムイよ。これが私の精一杯の捧げ物です。村を守ってください」
“O Kotan Kor Kamuy, this is my utmost offering. Please protect the village.”
夜が更け、月が高く昇った頃、再びあの声が響いた。
As night deepened and the moon rose high, that voice resounded once more.
「よくやった、人間の子よ。お前の心は清らかだ」
“Well done, child of man. Your heart is pure.”
すると、遠くの川から水音が変わった。
Then, from the distant river, the sound of water changed.
ザワザワと、力強い波が寄せてくる。
A powerful surge came roaring in.
サケの大群が、銀の鱗を輝かせながら遡上を始めたのだ。
A great school of salmon began ascending, their silver scales gleaming.
村人たちは歓声を上げ、網を手に川へ駆け寄った。
The villagers raised cheers and rushed to the river with nets.
シロクは木の上を見上げた。
Shiroku looked up at the tree.
ホウホウエカシは静かに枝に止まり、黄金の瞳で少年を見つめていた。
Hōhō Ekashi perched silently on a branch, gazing at the boy with golden eyes.
その瞳には、満足と、少しの寂しさが混じっていた。
In those eyes were mingled satisfaction and a touch of loneliness.
「これからは、私の代わりに、お前が村を見守れ。森を、川を、人々を」
“From now on, take my place and watch over the village. The forest, the river, the people.”
シロクは深く頭を下げた。「約束します。ずっと、忘れません」
Shiroku bowed deeply. “I promise. I will never forget.”
それからというもの、村は豊かになった。
From then on, the village prospered.
サケは毎年川を埋め、木々は元気に芽吹いた。
Salmon filled the river every year, and the trees sprouted vigorously.
シロクは成長し、立派な猟師となり、やがて長老となった。
Shiroku grew up, became a fine hunter, and eventually an elder.
彼は子どもたちに語り続けた。
He continued to tell the children.
「森にはいつも、コタンコロカムイが見ている。静かに、しかし確かに」
“In the forest, Kotan Kor Kamuy is always watching. Quietly, yet surely.”
ある冬の夜、老いたシロクは暖炉のそばで目を閉じた。
One winter night, the aged Shiroku closed his eyes by the hearth.
最後に聞いたのは、低く優しい「ヴォー……ヴォー……」という声だった。
The last thing he heard was a low, gentle “Vō… Vō…”
それは、別れの挨拶ではなく、永遠の約束のように聞こえた。
It sounded not like a farewell, but like an eternal promise.
今も知床の森の奥では、大きな影が夜空を舞っているという。
Even now, in the depths of the Shiretoko forest, a great shadow is said to dance across the night sky.
村を守る神は、姿を変え、声を変え、ただ静かに見守り続けている。
The god who protects the village changes form and voice, yet continues to watch over quietly.
人間が自然に感謝を忘れぬ限り、その黄金の瞳は決して曇ることはない。
As long as humans do not forget to give thanks to nature, those golden eyes will never cloud over.

シマフクロウ（Blakiston's fish owl）
世界最大級のフクロウとして知られる非常に印象的な鳥です。
基本的な大きさ・外見
- 体長：約63〜71cm（日本最大のフクロウ）
- 翼開長：約175〜190cm（最大で2m近くに達する個体も）
- 体重：3.4〜4.6kg程度（メスの方がやや大きい傾向）
- 現存するフクロウの中で世界最大級の種の一つ
- 全身は灰褐色〜濃い褐色で、黒褐色の縦縞と細い横縞が入る
- 顔の横に**長くて幅広い耳羽（羽角）**があり、特徴的
- 目は大きく鋭い黄色い虹彩
- 顔盤（顔を囲む羽毛）は比較的小さめで黒っぽい
- 足（ふ蹠）まで羽毛で覆われているが、指先は露出
- 嘴と脚は灰黒色
生態・習性
- 主食：魚類（淡水魚）が中心 → そのため「魚フクロウ」とも呼ばれる
- 他にもカエル、甲殻類、小型哺乳類、鳥類なども捕食
- 狩りの特徴：魚食性が強いため、他のフクロウのような極端な静音飛翔の羽（セレーション）がほとんどなく、飛ぶときに羽音が比較的聞こえやすい
- 活動時間：夜行性
- 鳴き声：雄が「ヴォー、ヴォー」、雌が「ヴー」と低く響くような声で鳴き交わす（非常に特徴的で遠くまで響く）
- 生息環境：河川・湖沼の周辺にある原生的な広葉樹林や針広混交林
- 大きな古木の樹洞に巣を作る
- 寿命：野生下で20〜30年程度

- アイヌ文化では「コタンコロカムイ」（村を守る神様）と呼ばれ、とても大切にされてきた存在です。
- 現在は環境破壊（河川改修・森林伐採）などで個体数が激減しており、絶滅危惧種（日本では絶滅危惧IA類、IUCNではVulnerable）に指定されています。
- 日本の生息数は100〜200羽程度と推定され、非常に貴重な鳥です。
