夏の森は、キラキラと輝いていた。

The summer forest was sparkling brightly.

木々の葉の間を、緑色の宝石みたいな虫がブンブン飛んでいる。

Between the leaves, a jewel-like green insect was buzzing around.

その名はカナブン。

Its name is Kanabun (Japanese Flower Beetle).

体長28ミリ、背中は銅色とエメラルドが混ざった金属光沢で、光が当たるたびに色が変わる。

It is about 28 mm long, and its back has a metallic luster mixing copper and emerald, changing color depending on the light.

頭は四角くてかっこよく、脚の先には鋭い爪が二本。

Its head is square and cool-looking, with two sharp claws at the tips of its legs.

飛ぶときは前翅をほんの少しだけ持ち上げて隙間を作り、後ろの薄い翅だけでブンブン！　

When it flies, it lifts its hard forewings (elytra) just a tiny bit to create a gap, then buzzes loudly using only its thin hindwings.

まるでヘリコプターみたいにホバリングもできる。

It can even hover like a helicopter.

カナブンはこの飛び方が大好きだった。

Kanabun loved this way of flying.

「今日もレストランに行こうぜ！」

“Today I’m going to the restaurant again!”

カナブンは朝からワクワク。

Kanabun was excited from the morning.

レストランとは、クヌギの古木の幹にぽたぽた樹液がにじみ出る場所。

The “restaurant” was a spot on the trunk of an old sawtooth oak tree where tree sap was dripping steadily.

森の住人たちはみんな「樹液レストラン」と呼んでいた。

All the forest creatures called it the “Tree Sap Restaurant.”

カブトムシ、クワガタ、シロテンハナムグリ、時には小さな蝶まで集まる、夏の超人気スポットだ。

It was a super popular summer spot where rhinoceros beetles, stag beetles, white-spotted flower beetles, and sometimes even small butterflies gathered.

カナブンは昼行性。朝の陽が昇ったらすぐに飛び立つ。

Kanabun is diurnal. As soon as the morning sun rises, it takes off.

「よーし、離陸！」

“All right, takeoff!”

前翅をカチッと少し開き、後翅を高速回転。

It clicked its forewings open just a little and spun its hindwings at high speed.

風を切って一直線！

It flew straight, cutting through the wind!

他の虫たちは「前翅をガバッと開かないと飛べないのに、カナブンだけあんなに速いんだよなあ」と感心する。

The other insects were impressed, saying, “We have to open our forewings wide to fly, but Kanabun is so fast even though he barely opens his!”

レストランに到着すると、もう大盛況だった。

When Kanabun arrived at the restaurant, it was already very lively.

「カナブン兄ちゃん、遅いぞー！」

“Hey, big brother Kanabun, you’re late!”

声をかけたのは、巨大な角を持つカブトムシのトシオくん。

The one who called out was Toshio, a rhinoceros beetle with huge horns.

体長はカナブンの倍以上あるのに、飛ぶのは苦手。いつも「重くて飛べねえよ」とブツブツ言っている。

Although he was more than twice as long as Kanabun, he was bad at flying and always grumbled, “I’m too heavy to fly.”

隣にはクワガタのジャンボさん。大アゴをカチカチ鳴らしながら「今日の樹液は甘いぜ！」と自慢げ。

Next to him was Jumbo the stag beetle, clicking his large mandibles proudly and saying, “Today’s sap is super sweet!”

さらに白い斑点だらけのシロテンハナムグリのミホちゃんが、はしゃいでいる。

Also there was Miho, a white-spotted flower beetle covered in white spots, who was bouncing around excitedly.

カナブンはみんなの間にスッと着陸。

Kanabun landed smoothly among everyone.

脚の爪で樹皮をしっかり掴み、口をブラシみたいに動かして樹液をチュルチュル。

He gripped the bark firmly with his leg claws and slurped the sap by moving his mouth like a brush.

「うまい！　今年のクヌギの樹液は最高だな。熟した果実も少し混ざってる味がするよ」

“Delicious! This year’s sawtooth oak sap is the best. It even has a bit of the flavor of ripe fruit mixed in.”

成虫のカナブンは樹液と果実が大好物。葉はほとんど食べないから、森の木々にも優しい益虫だ。

Adult Kanabun love tree sap and fruit. They hardly eat leaves, so they are beneficial insects that are kind to the forest trees.

みんなでワイワイおしゃべり。

Everyone was chatting noisily.

「ねえ、カナブンさん、幼虫の頃ってどんな感じだったの？」とミホちゃんが聞いた。

“Hey, Mr. Kanabun, what was it like when you were a larva?” Miho asked.

カナブンはにこっと笑って答えた。

Kanabun smiled and answered.

「俺は土の中でCの字に丸くなって、腐葉土や朽ち木をガッツリ食べて育ったんだ。」

“I curled up in a C-shape in the soil and grew up eating lots of leaf mold and rotting wood.”

白くてプニプニだったよ。

I was white and squishy.

冬も地中でじっと耐えて、春にさなぎになって、夏にこうやってピカピカの大人になったんだぜ。

I endured the winter quietly underground, became a pupa in spring, and turned into this shiny adult in summer.

土をふかふかにしてくれるから、森の恩人なんだって先生に習ったよ。

I learned from my teacher that we help the forest by making the soil fluffy, so we are benefactors of the forest.

「へえー！　カブトも同じだよ！」とトシオくんが自慢する。

“Wow! Rhinoceros beetles are the same!” Toshio boasted.

そこへ、突然事件が起きた。

Then, suddenly, something happened.

「きゃあああ！　樹液が止まってるー！」

“Kyaaa! The sap has stopped coming out!”

ミホちゃんが叫んだ。

Miho screamed.

見ると、クヌギの幹の傷口から出てた樹液が、ぴたりと乾いている。

When they looked, the sap that had been dripping from the wound on the oak trunk had completely dried up.

どうやら昨日の猛暑で木が疲れてしまったらしい。

It seemed the tree had become tired from yesterday’s extreme heat.

「ええっ！　レストラン閉店！？」

“Whaaat!? The restaurant is closed!?”

ジャンボさんが大アゴをガクッと落とした。

Jumbo dropped his large mandibles in shock.

みんながしょんぼり。

Everyone became depressed.

樹液がないと、夏のエネルギー補給ができない。

Without sap, they couldn’t recharge their energy for summer.

カナブンは金属光沢の体をピカッと光らせて立ち上がった。

Kanabun stood up, making his metallic body shine brightly.

「大丈夫！　俺に任せろ。新しいレストランを探してくる！」

“Don’t worry! Leave it to me. I’ll go find a new restaurant!”

「え、でもどこに？」

“Where?”

「森の奥、ヤナギの並木に聞いた噂があるんだ。『隠れ樹液レストラン』ってやつ。」

“I heard a rumor about a hidden tree sap restaurant deep in the forest, in a row of willow trees.”

俺の飛行能力で一気に偵察してくるよ！

I’ll scout it out quickly with my flying ability!

カナブンは即離陸。

Kanabun took off immediately.

前翅をほんの1ミリだけ持ち上げ、後翅フル回転。

He lifted his forewings just a tiny millimeter and spun his hindwings at full speed.

森の上をスイスイ、ホバリングしながら探す。

He flew smoothly above the forest, hovering as he searched.

普通の甲虫なら前翅を大きく開いてガサガサ飛ぶけど、カナブンは空気抵抗が少なく、風を味方にして超速！

While ordinary beetles open their forewings wide and fly noisily, Kanabun has low air resistance and can fly super fast by using the wind to his advantage!

「あったぞー！」

“Found it!”

ヤナギの木の根本に、大きな傷があって、甘～い樹液がドバドバ流れていた。

At the base of a willow tree, there was a big wound, and sweet sap was flowing out abundantly.

しかも熟した山ぶどうの実も落ちていて、まさに夢のレストラン！

On top of that, ripe wild grapes had fallen, making it a dream restaurant!

でも問題が一つ。

But there was one problem.

そこは鳥の巣の真下。カラスが時々飛んでくる危険ゾーンだった。

It was right under a bird’s nest, a dangerous zone where crows sometimes flew by.

「よし、みんなを連れてくる！」

“Okay, I’ll bring everyone!”

カナブンはまた爆速で戻り、みんなに報告。

Kanabun flew back at top speed and reported to the others.

「でも鳥が……」とトシオくんが心配そう。

“But there are birds…” Toshio said worriedly.

「任せろ！　俺の作戦がある！」

“Leave it to me! I have a plan!”

カナブンはみんなを率いて移動作戦を開始。

Kanabun led everyone and started the relocation operation.

まずカブトとクワガタは歩いて（飛べないから）。

First, the rhinoceros and stag beetles walked (since they couldn’t fly well).

カナブンとミホちゃんは空中から偵察しながら誘導。

Kanabun and Miho guided them from the air while scouting.

「鳥が来たら俺が囮になる！　金属光沢でキラキラ光って注意を引くんだ！」

“If a bird comes, I’ll be the decoy! I’ll shine my metallic luster brightly to attract its attention!”

無事到着！

They arrived safely!

新しいレストランは最高だった。

The new restaurant was fantastic.

樹液はトロトロで、ぶどうの実もジューシー。

The sap was thick and sweet, and the grapes were juicy.

みんなで大宴会。

Everyone had a big feast.

「カナブン兄ちゃん、ありがとう！」

“Thank you, big brother Kanabun!”

「俺の飛び方、役に立ったろ？」とカナブンは胸を張る。

“My flying skills were useful, right?” Kanabun said proudly, puffing out his chest.

そこへ、突然カラスが飛んできた！

Then, suddenly a crow flew in!

「わー！　逃げてー！」

“Waaah! Run away!”

みんなパニック。

Everyone panicked.

でもカナブンは冷静。

But Kanabun stayed calm.

「みんな、後ろの茂みに隠れて！　俺が引きつける！」

“Everyone, hide in the bushes behind! I’ll lure it away!”

カナブンは金属の体を最大限に輝かせ、ブンブン高速飛行。

Kanabun made his metallic body shine as brightly as possible and flew at high speed.

カラスの目の前をホバリングしながら、くるくる回って気を引く。

He hovered right in front of the crow, spinning around to attract its attention.

前翅をほとんど開かない独特の飛び方で、素早く逃げながら誘導。

Using his unique flying style with almost no forewing opening, he quickly led the crow away.

カラスは「なんだこのキラキラ虫！」と追いかけてきたが、カナブンはヤナギの枝の隙間をスルスル通り抜け、結局カラスは疲れて諦めて飛んでいった。

The crow chased after him saying, “What is this shiny bug!?” but Kanabun slipped smoothly through the gaps in the willow branches, and finally the crow got tired and gave up.

「やったー！　カナブン最強！」

“Yay! Kanabun is the strongest!”

みんなが拍手喝采。

Everyone cheered and clapped.

樹液レストランは再開。

The tree sap restaurant reopened.

カブトは樹液をたらふく飲み、クワガタは大アゴでぶどうをシェアし、ミホちゃんは幸せそうにくるくる回る。

Toshio drank sap until he was full, Jumbo shared grapes with his big mandibles, and Miho twirled around happily.

夕暮れ。

カナブンは満足げに言った。

At dusk, Kanabun said with satisfaction,

「樹液レストランは、ただの食事処じゃない。みんなで助け合う場所だよな。

“The tree sap restaurant isn’t just a place to eat. It’s a place where everyone helps each other.

俺はこれからも、速い飛び方でみんなを守るぜ！」

From now on, I’ll keep protecting everyone with my fast flying!”

森に夕陽が沈む頃、カナブンはキラキラ光りながら家路についた。

As the sun set over the forest, Kanabun flew home sparkling brightly.

来週も、もちろん常連だ。

Of course, he would be a regular again next week.

だって、樹液レストランはカナブンにとって、夏の最高の冒険ステージなんだから！

カナブン（金蚉、金亀虫）

コガネムシ科ハナムグリ亜科に属する昆虫で、日本では夏の代表的な甲虫の一つです。緑や銅色の美しい金属光沢が特徴的で、樹液に集まる姿がよく見られます。

外見の特徴

体長: 約22〜30mm程度。ハナムグリの仲間としてはやや大型です。
体型: 頭部が四角く、背面が平らめで全体的にずんぐり・扁平気味。角ばった印象で、コガネムシのような丸みのある体型とは異なります。
色: 全身に金属光沢があり、緑色、銅色（赤みがかかった茶色）、青みがかったものなど個体差が大きいです。模様はほとんどなく、シンプルな輝きが魅力。光の当たり方でキラキラと色が変わって見えます（構造色によるもの）。
その他の特徴: 脚の先端に鋭い爪が2本あり、樹上で滑りにくい構造。ハナムグリ亜科らしい大きな三角形の小楯板（羽の付け根部分）があります。

飛び方の特徴

カナブンの最大の特徴の一つが飛行能力の高さです。通常の甲虫とは違い、前翅（硬い鞘翅）をほとんど開かずにわずかに持ち上げるだけで隙間を作り、後翅だけでブンブンと飛べます。離陸も着陸もスムーズで、速く飛べるだけでなくホバリングのような動きも得意。夏の空を元気に飛び回る姿が印象的です。

生態・習性

活動時期: 主に6〜8月の夏（昼行性）。夜に街灯に飛来することもありますが、基本は日中活動。
餌: 成虫はクヌギ、コナラ、ヤナギなどの広葉樹の樹液や、熟した果実を好みます。樹液の出る場所にカブトムシやクワガタムシと一緒に集まる「樹液レストラン」の常連です。口器をブラシのように動かして樹液を舐め取ります。
生息地: 日本全国（北海道〜九州）の雑木林や森林、公園の樹木周辺。平地から山地まで広く見られます。
幼虫: 白っぽい体でC字型に曲がり、頭が茶色。腐葉土や朽ち木、堆肥などの腐植質を食べ、土壌の分解・改善に役立つ益虫です。成虫とは異なり、地中や乾燥した環境で育ちます。幼虫時代は長く、冬を越して春にさなぎになり、夏に成虫になります。
寿命: 成虫は短命で、約1ヶ月程度。
