森の白い滑空者 - living things

日本固有の大型ムササビ「ホオジロムササビ（ホンドムササビ）」の

実際の生態（滑空の仕組み、夜行性、食性など）をできる限り忠実に織り交ぜた物語。

深い山の奥、杉と広葉樹が織りなす古い森に、一匹のホオジロムササビがいた。

Deep in the mountains, in an old forest of cedar and broad-leaved trees, there lived a Japanese giant flying squirrel.

名を「白影（しろかげ）」という。

His name was “Shirokage” (White Shadow).

体長は頭胴だけで四十センチ近くあり、太くふさふさの尾を優雅に翻す立派な雄だった。

He was a magnificent male with a head-body length of nearly 40 centimeters and a thick, bushy tail that he waved gracefully.

耳の前から頬にかけて走る鮮やかな白い帯が、夜の闇でもかすかに光る。

The bright white stripe running from in front of his ears to his cheeks faintly glowed even in the night darkness.

彼は生まれて三年目、独り立ちして三年目の春を迎えていた。

He was in his third spring since leaving his parents.

昼間、白影は古いブナの樹洞に身を隠していた。

During the day, Shirokage hid inside an old beech tree hollow.

洞の入り口は苔に覆われ、外からはほとんど見えない。

The entrance was covered with moss and almost invisible from outside.

時折、遠くでクマが木を引っ掻く音や、フクロウの低い鳴き声が聞こえるが、彼は静かに丸くなっていた。

Occasionally he could hear bears scratching trees or the low calls of owls in the distance, but he remained curled up quietly.

太陽が西の稜線に沈むと、ようやく体を起こす。

When the sun sank behind the western ridge, he finally stirred.

大きな黒い瞳が輝き、長い髭が微かな風を感じ取る。

His large black eyes sparkled, and his long whiskers sensed the faint breeze.

夜の森は彼の王国だった。

The night forest was his kingdom.

白影はまず巣の近くの若葉を何枚かむしゃむしゃと食べた。

First, Shirokage munched on several young leaves near his nest.

ホオジロムササビの胃は繊維質に強く、木の芽や新葉、時には樹皮までも消化できる。

A Japanese giant flying squirrel’s stomach is strong with fiber and can digest tree buds, new leaves, and even bark.

腹がほどよく膨らむと、彼は木の幹を軽やかに駆け上がった。

Once his belly was nicely full, he lightly ran up the tree trunk.

爪は鋭く、樹皮に深く食い込む。

His claws were sharp and dug deeply into the bark.

「よし、今夜も飛ぶか」

“Right, shall I fly again tonight?”

白影は木のてっぺんに近い太枝まで登り、姿勢を低くした。

Shirokage climbed to a thick branch near the treetop and lowered his posture.

前肢と後肢の間の広い飛膜を、隠れていた手首の軟骨でピンと広げる。

He spread the wide flying membrane between his forelimbs and hindlimbs using the hidden cartilage in his wrists.

体全体が一枚の黒い翼のように見えた。

His whole body looked like a single black wing.

彼は一瞬、風の流れを読み、力強く跳び出した。

He read the flow of the wind for a moment and jumped powerfully.

滑空の瞬間、森が一気に広がる。

The moment he glided, the forest spread out instantly.

三十メートル先の別の巨木に向かって、緩やかな弧を描く。

He drew a gentle arc toward another giant tree thirty meters ahead.

尾を微妙に動かし、方向を調整する。

He adjusted direction by subtly moving his tail.

着地直前、飛膜をパラシュートのように開いて速度を落とし、四本の足で幹に吸い付くように止まった。

Just before landing, he opened the membrane like a parachute to slow down and clung to the trunk with all four feet.

完璧な着地だった。

It was a perfect landing.

白影は満足げに鼻を鳴らした。

Shirokage snorted with satisfaction.

しかし今夜はいつもと違った。

But tonight was different.

谷の向こう側から、甘い香りが漂ってきた。

A sweet scent drifted from across the valley.

山桜の花が満開で、蜜を含んだ若い実が膨らみ始めていた。

The mountain cherry blossoms were in full bloom, and young honey-filled fruits were beginning to swell.

白影は数回の滑空を繰り返し、谷を越えた。

Shirokage repeated several glides and crossed the valley.

そこは彼の縄張りの境界線だった。年老いたメスのムササビが以前住んでいた区域だ。

It was the boundary of his territory — an area where an old female flying squirrel once lived.

彼女の気配はもうなかった。

Her presence was gone.

おそらく天寿を全うしたのだろう。

She had probably lived out her natural life.

新しい木に着地した瞬間、白影は異変を感じた。

The moment he landed on a new tree, Shirokage sensed danger.

木の根元に、鋭い目が光っていた。

Sharp eyes were glowing at the base of the tree.

アナグマの若獣だ。

It was a young Asian badger.

夜行性のアナグマは、時には樹上にも登ってくる。

Nocturnal badgers sometimes climb trees.

白影は即座に反応した。

Shirokage reacted instantly.

幹を螺旋状に駆け上がり、反対側の太枝へ。

He spiraled up the trunk and moved to a thick branch on the opposite side.

アナグマは重い体で木を揺らしながら追いかけてくる。

The badger chased after him, shaking the tree with its heavy body.

「逃げるしかない」

“I have no choice but to escape.”

白影は最大の滑空を試みた。

Shirokage attempted his longest glide yet.

谷底に向かって、斜めに長く飛ぶ。

He flew diagonally downward toward the valley bottom.

飛膜を最大限に広げ、風を捉える。

He spread his membrane to the maximum and caught the wind.

五十メートル、六十メートル。

Fifty meters, sixty meters.

体が風を切り裂く音がする。

The sound of his body slicing through the air echoed.

後ろからアナグマの唸り声が遠ざかっていく。

The badger’s growls faded behind him.

白影は谷の反対側の斜面に着地し、さらに二回の短い滑空で安全な高木へと逃げ込んだ。

Shirokage landed on the opposite slope and escaped to a safe tall tree with two more short glides.

心臓が激しく鼓動していたが、生き延びた喜びが全身を満たした。

His heart was pounding, but the joy of survival filled his whole body.

それから数日後、白影は再びその谷に戻った。

A few days later, Shirokage returned to the valley.

今度は敵の気配はなかった。

This time there was no sign of the enemy.

代わりに、甘い鳴き声が聞こえた。

Instead, he heard a sweet call.

メスのホオジロムササビだった。

It was a female Japanese giant flying squirrel.

彼女の白い頬の帯は少し細く、動きは軽やかだった。

Her white cheek stripes were a little narrower, and her movements were light.

二匹は数メートル離れた木の上で互いを見つめ合った。

The two stared at each other from trees a few meters apart.

白影は勇気を出して彼女の木へ短く滑空した。

Shirokage bravely made a short glide to her tree.

彼女は逃げなかった。

She did not run away.

二匹は同じ木の異なる枝で並び、夜通し葉を食べ、時折「グルル…」と低い声で会話した。

The two sat on different branches of the same tree, ate leaves all night, and occasionally exchanged low “Gurru…” sounds.

夏が来た。

Summer arrived.

白影と彼女の間には二匹の子が生まれた。

Two pups were born between Shirokage and her.

小さな赤ちゃんたちはまだ飛膜も小さく、巣の中で母の乳を飲んでいた。

The tiny babies still had small membranes and drank their mother’s milk inside the nest.

白影は夜ごとに遠くまで食べ物を探し、巣の近くの安全な木に運んだ。

Every night, Shirokage searched far for food and carried it to a safe tree near the nest.

ある夜、激しい雨が降った。

One night, heavy rain fell.

木の洞が水浸しになりかけたが、白影は家族を別の古い樹洞へ誘導した。

The tree hollow was about to flood, so Shirokage guided his family to another old hollow.

滑空しながら、子を背中に乗せて運ぶことはできない。

He could not carry the pups on his back while gliding.

だから何度も往復し、母と子が安全に移動するまで見守った。

So he made many round trips and watched over them until the mother and pups moved safely.

秋の深まりとともに、森は実りで溢れた。

As autumn deepened, the forest overflowed with fruit.

ドングリ、クルミ、木の実が豊富だった。

Acorns, walnuts, and tree nuts were plentiful.

白影は家族のために最高の場所を探し、冬に備えて体に脂肪を蓄えた。

Shirokage searched for the best places for his family and stored fat in his body for winter.

雪が降り始める頃、彼は家族と離れ、再び独りの生活に戻った。

When snow began to fall, he left his family and returned to a solitary life.

子たちはすでに自分で滑空できるようになっていた。

The pups could already glide by themselves.

次の春、白影はまたあの谷の桜の木に戻った。

The following spring, Shirokage returned once again to the cherry tree in that valley.

白い頬のメスが、去年と同じ場所で待っていたわけではなかったが、新たな出会いがあった。

The white-cheeked female was not waiting in the same place as last year, but he had a new encounter.

森は常に変わり続け、命もまた巡る。

The forest constantly changes, and life continues its cycle.

白影は今夜も滑空する。闇を切り裂き、白い頬を月光に輝かせながら。

Shirokage glides again tonight, slicing through the darkness with his white cheeks shining in the moonlight.

ホオジロムササビの物語は、静かな森の中で、今日も続いている。

The story of the Japanese giant flying squirrel continues today in the quiet forest.

ホオジロムササビ（学名：Petaurista leucogenys）

日本固有の大型のムササビ（飛鼠）です。北海道を除く本州・四国・九州などに生息するリスの仲間です。

主な身体的特徴

大きさ: 頭胴長27～49cm、尾長28～41cm、体重700～1,500g程度。日本に生息するネズミ目（齧歯類）としては最大級の在来種です（ホンドモモンガに比べてはるかに大きい）。
飛膜（ひまく）: 前肢と後肢の間だけでなく、首や尾の基部にもつながる広い膜を持ち、滑空時に「空飛ぶ座布団」のように広がります。手首の針状軟骨を広げて飛膜の面積を増やし、長いふさふさの尾を舵のように使って方向を調整します。滑空距離は通常30m程度、最大で100m以上になることもあります。
毛色と模様: 背面は暗褐色～灰褐色、腹面は白っぽい。**顔の側面（耳の前から下顎にかけて）に目立つ白い帯（白門）**があるのが特徴的です。目が小さく鋭い印象です。
尾: 太く丸みがあり、長いのが特徴。モモンガのような平たい尾とは異なります。

生態・習性の特徴

夜行性: 昼間は樹洞や巣で休み、夜間に活動します。
樹上生活: ほぼ一生を木の上で過ごし、地上に降りることは稀です。
食性: 植物食が中心で、木の葉、芽、果実、樹皮、種子などを食べます。季節によって食べるものが変わります。
行動: 基本的に単独行動。同じ巣や滑空ルートを繰り返し使う習性があります。滑空は効率的な移動や敵からの回避に役立ちます。
鳴き声: 「グルルル」「キュルルル」といった比較的力強い音を出します。
