野生のアビシニアジャッカルの過酷で美しい世界。

エチオピアの高山で家族を守るために戦った一頭のメスの物語です。

エチオピアのバレ山脈、標高3800メートル。
Ethiopian Bale Mountains, at an altitude of 3,800 meters.
朝の光がまだ冷たく、空気が薄い場所。

The morning light is still cold, and the air is thin.

そこに一頭の若いメスのアビシニアジャッカルがいた。
There lived a young female Abyssinian jackal.
名前は知られていない。ただ、群れの者たちは彼女を「レッド」と呼んでいた。
Her name was unknown, but the pack members called her “Red.”

背中の赤橙色の毛が、朝日を浴びると燃えるように輝くからだ。
Because the reddish-orange fur on her back shone like fire when bathed in morning sunlight.

レッドは生まれてからずっと、この高山のエルフィン・モスとヘザーの間に生きてきた。
Red had lived her entire life among the elfin moss and heather of this high mountain.

母は「シルバー」、父は「ストーン」。
Her mother was “Silver,” and her father was “Stone.”

かつて7頭いたパックは、今は5頭になっていた。
The pack that once had seven members was now down to five.

2頭の兄弟が去年の乾季に消えた。
Two brothers had disappeared during last year’s dry season.

理由は誰も知らない。

No one knew the reason.

ただ、夜明けに嗅いだ空気がいつもより重かったことだけが残っている。
Only the memory remained that the air smelled heavier than usual at dawn.

毎朝、パックは丘の頂で集まる。
Every morning, the pack gathers at the top of the hill.

鼻を突き合わせて挨拶し、尾を軽く振って縄張りを確認する。
They touch noses in greeting and lightly wag their tails to confirm their territory.

言葉はない。でも、そこには確かな絆があった。
There are no words. But there is a sure bond.

昼になると、それぞれが単独で散っていく。
When daytime comes, each member scatters alone.
レッドもまた、長い脚を運んで草の丈の低い湿原へ向かう。
Red also heads toward the low-grass wetland with her long legs.

彼女の獲物はほとんど決まっていた。
Her prey was almost always the same.
エチオピアオオタケネズミとクロツメブラシネズミ。
Ethiopian big-headed rats and groove-toothed rats.

穴から顔を出す瞬間を、息を殺して待つ。
She waits breathlessly for the moment they poke their heads out of their holes.
耳を立て、地面の微かな振動を聴く。
She pricks up her ears and listens to the faint vibrations of the ground.

今日の最初の獲物は大きめのオオタケネズミだった。
Today’s first prey was a rather large big-headed rat.
穴の縁で草の根をかじっていた。
It was nibbling grass roots at the edge of its hole.

レッドは30メートル離れた岩の影から、ゆっくりと腹這いになった。
Red slowly crouched down from the shadow of a rock 30 meters away.
風向きは完璧。獲物は気づかない。
The wind direction was perfect. The prey did not notice.

そして、跳んだ。
And then she leaped.
前脚が地面を蹴り、赤い体が弧を描く。
Her front legs kicked the ground, and her red body drew an arc.

獲物は最後の瞬間に振り向いたが、もう遅い。
The prey turned its head at the last moment, but it was too late.
レッドの長い吻が首元を捉え、一振りで終わらせた。
Red’s long muzzle caught its neck, and with one shake, it was over.

血の匂いが朝の冷たい空気に広がる。
The smell of blood spread into the cold morning air.
彼女はすぐに食べ始めた。内臓から。
She began eating immediately, starting with the organs.]

食べ終わると、レッドは顔を上げた。
When she finished eating, Red lifted her face.
遠くの斜面に、別の赤い影が見えた。
On the distant slope, another red shadow appeared.

オスだ。若い。

It was a male. Young.

去年の冬に別の群れから来た新入りで、まだ名前がない。
A newcomer who joined from another pack last winter and still had no name.

レッドは一瞬だけ目を合わせた。
Red met his eyes for just a moment.

オスは尾を低くして、静かに頭を下げた。
The male lowered his tail and quietly bowed his head.

レッドは無視して歩き出した。
Red ignored him and walked away.

まだ腹は満たされていない。
Her stomach was not yet full.

午後になると、雲が低く垂れ込めてきた。
In the afternoon, clouds hung low.

霧が湿原を覆い、視界が白く濁る。
Mist covered the wetland, turning the view white and hazy.

そんな時でもレッドは狩りをやめない。
Even then, Red did not stop hunting.
鼻と耳だけが頼りだ。
Her nose and ears were her only guides.

今日の二匹目は、草むらで凍りついていたクロツメブラシネズミだった。
Today’s second prey was a groove-toothed rat frozen in the grass.
霧の中で、レッドの赤い毛だけがぼんやりと浮かぶ。まるで幽霊のように。
In the mist, only Red’s red fur faintly floated—like a ghost.

狩りが終わった頃、空はもうオレンジ色に染まっていた。

By the time hunting ended, the sky was already dyed orange.
レッドは隠していた獲物を掘り起こし、ゆっくりと丘を登った。
Red dug up her cached prey and slowly climbed the hill.

パックが待つ場所。
To the place where the pack waited.
そこにはシルバーがいた。母はもう年を取っていた。

There was Silver. Her mother had grown old.

歩き方が少しぎこちない。けれど、目だけはまだ鋭い。
Her gait was a little awkward. But her eyes were still sharp.

「今日はどうだった？」
“How was today?”
シルバーは鼻を近づけてきた。
Silver brought her nose close.

レッドは獲物を地面に置いた。
Red placed the prey on the ground.
母は一口だけ食べて、残りを子犬たちに回した。
Her mother took only one bite and passed the rest to the pups.

まだ生後8ヶ月の弟妹たち。毛はふわふわで、赤みが薄い。
The siblings were still only 8 months old. Their fur was fluffy and the red was faint.
まだ狩りを覚えていない。
They had not yet learned to hunt.

夜が来ると、パックは開けた場所に集まって寝る。
When night came, the pack gathered in an open place to sleep.
誰も巣穴には入らない。星が見える場所が好きだった。
No one entered a den. They liked places where the stars could be seen.

レッドは少し離れて横たわった。
Red lay down a little apart.
風が冷たい。遠くでゲラダヒヒの鳴き声が響く。
The wind was cold. In the distance, gelada baboon calls echoed.

時々、遠くの村から犬の遠吠えが聞こえてくる。
Sometimes, the howls of dogs came from the distant village.
その音を聞くたび、レッドの耳はピクリと動いた。
Every time she heard that sound, Red’s ears twitched.

翌朝、レッドは異変を感じた。
The next morning, Red sensed something unusual.
いつもより静かだった。ネズミたちの動きが少ない。
It was quieter than usual. The rodents were moving less.

風向きが変わり、どこからか焦げたような匂いが漂ってくる。
The wind changed direction, carrying a scorched-like smell from somewhere.
人間の匂い。そして、もう一つ。病気の匂い。
The scent of humans. And one more: the smell of sickness.

シルバーが最初に気づいた。
Silver noticed it first.
丘の下の斜面に、知らない犬がいた。
On the slope below the hill, there was an unfamiliar dog.

痩せていて、よだれを垂らしている。目が赤い。
It was emaciated, drooling, with red eyes.
パック全員が立ち上がった。低く唸る。
The entire pack stood up and growled lowly.

オスが前に出た。レッドも続いた。
The male stepped forward. Red followed.
犬はよろよろと近づいてくる。狂犬病だ。
The dog approached unsteadily. It was rabies.

誰もが知っていた。去年も、隣の谷で別の群れが全滅した話を聞いた。
Everyone knew. Last year, another pack in the neighboring valley had been wiped out.

シルバーが吠えた。鋭く、長く。警告だ。
Silver barked—sharp and long. A warning.

犬は止まらない。
The dog did not stop.

レッドは一瞬迷った。そして、跳んだ。
Red hesitated for a moment. Then she leaped.

彼女は犬の横をすり抜け、わざと岩場の方へ誘導した。
She slipped past the dog’s side, deliberately leading it toward the rocky area.

パックは後を追う。
The pack followed.

犬はよろめきながら追いかけてくる。
The dog chased after, staggering.

レッドはわざと速度を落とした。

Red deliberately slowed down.

犬が近づく。息が荒い。よだれが地面に落ちる。
The dog drew closer. Its breathing was ragged. Drool fell to the ground.

そして、レッドは急に止まった。振り向いた。
Then Red suddenly stopped and turned.

犬が飛びかかってきた瞬間、彼女は横に跳んだ。
The moment the dog lunged, she leaped sideways.

犬は勢い余って岩に頭をぶつけた。動かなくなった。
The dog crashed headfirst into a rock from its own momentum. It stopped moving.

パックは丘の上に戻った。
The pack returned to the top of the hill.
誰も傷つかなかった。でも、誰も喜ばなかった。
No one was hurt. But no one rejoiced.

ただ、静かに鼻を突き合わせた。
They simply touched noses quietly.
シルバーがレッドの頬を舐めた。ありがとう、と言っているようだった。
Silver licked Red’s cheek. It seemed to say “thank you.”

それから数日後、雨が降った。
A few days later, it rained.
高山の雨は冷たくて長い。
The high mountain rain was cold and long.

ネズミたちは穴に籠もる。狩りが難しくなる。
The rodents stayed in their burrows. Hunting became difficult.
弟妹たちはお腹を空かせて鳴いた。
The siblings cried out in hunger.

シルバーはほとんど食べなくなっていた。
Silver had almost stopped eating.
体力を温存しようとしているのだ。
She was trying to conserve her strength.

レッドは決めた。
Red made up her mind.
夜明け前、彼女は一人で谷を下った。
Before dawn, she went down the valley alone.

人間の畑の近く。そこには、時々捨てられた羊の死骸がある。
Near the human fields. There were occasionally discarded sheep carcasses.
危険だが、仕方ない。弟妹たちが待っている。
It was dangerous, but unavoidable. The siblings were waiting.

畑の端で、彼女は見つけた。古い羊の死体。
At the edge of the field, she found it—an old sheep carcass.
まだ腐っていない。
It was not yet rotten.

レッドは急いで引きずった。重い。足がもつれる。
Red dragged it hurriedly. It was heavy. Her legs tangled.
でも、諦めなかった。
But she did not give up.

丘を登る途中、彼女は足を滑らせた。
On the way up the hill, she slipped.
死体が転がり落ちる。レッドも一緒に落ちた。
The carcass rolled down. Red fell with it.

岩に体を打ちつけた。痛みが走る。
She struck her body against rocks. Pain shot through her.
左の前脚が動かない。
Her left front leg no longer moved.

それでも、彼女は這って登った。
Even so, she crawled upward.
死体をくわえ直した。血が口の中に広がる。自分の血だ。
She gripped the carcass again. Blood spread in her mouth—her own blood.

パックが見えた時、レッドはもう立てなかった。
When the pack came into view, Red could no longer stand.
シルバーが駆け寄ってきた。弟妹たちが鳴いた。
Silver rushed over. The siblings cried out.

レッドは最後の力を振り絞って、死体をみんなの前に置いた。
With her last strength, Red placed the carcass in front of everyone.
シルバーはレッドの顔を舐めた。
Silver licked Red’s face.

弟妹たちは食べ始めた。
The siblings began to eat.
レッドは横たわったまま、空を見上げた。
Red lay there, gazing up at the sky.

雲の切れ間から、星が見えた。
Through a break in the clouds, stars were visible.
朝が来た。
Morning came.

レッドは目を閉じた。
Red closed her eyes.
赤い毛が風に揺れる。
Her red fur swayed in the wind.

遠くで、新しいオスが丘に立っていた。先日のオスだ。
In the distance, the new male stood on the hill—the same one from before.
彼は静かに近づき、レッドのそばに座った。
He quietly approached and sat beside Red.

尾を低くして、ただそこにいた。
With his tail low, he simply stayed there.
シルバーは子犬たちを連れて、少し離れた場所へ移動した。
Silver led the pups and moved to a slightly distant place.

新しい縄張りを探すためだ。
To search for a new territory.
オスは最後までレッドのそばにいた。
The male stayed by Red’s side until the end.

数日後、その場所を通った研究者が、赤い毛の亡骸を見つけた。
A few days later, a researcher passing by found the red-furred remains.
そばには、もう一頭の若いオスがいた。動かずに、ただ見守るように。
Beside it was the young male, motionless, simply watching over her.

研究者は記録を取った。
The researcher recorded it.
「バレ山脈、標高3820m。成獣メス1頭、死亡推定。原因：外傷と衰弱。」
“Bale Mountains, altitude 3820m. Adult female, presumed dead. Cause: trauma and weakness.”

「そばに若いオス1頭、警戒中。パックは移動した模様。」
“Young male nearby, on alert. Pack appears to have moved.”
誰も知らない。レッドが最後にした約束を。
No one knows the promise Red made at the end.

彼女は、家族を空腹から守った。
She protected her family from hunger.
そして、赤い影は、高山の風の中に溶けていった。
And the red shadow melted into the high mountain wind.

アビシニアジャッカル（Canis simensis）

すごく美しいけど超レアなイヌ科の動物です。

日本では「アビシニアジャッカル」と呼ばれることが多いけど、世界的にはエチオピアオオカミ（Ethiopian wolf）、シミエンジャッカル、シミエンフォックス、レッドジャッカルなどいろんな呼び名があります。

実はジャッカルというよりオオカミに近い種です。

主な特徴まとめ

見た目：すごくスラッとしてキツネっぽい印象

毛色：背中側が鮮やかな赤橙色〜赤褐色（ルセット色）
喉・胸・お腹・脚の内側：白〜淡い色
尾：ふさふさで先端が黒い
耳：尖っていて黒い斑紋が入る
顔：細長くてキツネ顔っぽい（吻が特に長い）
脚：長くて細い（高山を素早く移動するため）

体長：オス約93〜101cm、メス約84〜96cm
尾長：27〜40cmくらい
体高：45〜60cm
体重：オス14〜19kgくらい、メス11〜14kgくらい
→ コヨーテくらいのサイズ感で、普通のジャッカルよりやや大きめ

生息地
エチオピアの高山（標高3,000〜4,400mの Afroalpine 地帯）だけに生息
→ 世界で最も狭い範囲にしかいないイヌ科動物の一つ
食べ物
ほぼ肉食で、特にネズミ類（特にエチオピア固有の高山ネズミ）を専門に狩る
→ 胃内容物の96%がネズミだったという報告もあるくらい超専門家
