絶滅したはずの古代魚が、今も深海で静かに生き続けている――。

そんな奇跡のような存在、シーラカンスの物語。

暗く冷たい深海の底、太陽の光が決して届かない水深500メートルの世界。
In the dark, cold depths of the ocean, at 500 meters where sunlight never reaches.
そこで暮らすシーラカンスの老母、名をラティと呼ぼう。
There lives an old female coelacanth; let us call her Lati.

彼女の体は2メートルを超え、硬い硬鱗に覆われ、青みがかった肌に白い斑点が散らばっていた。
Her body exceeds 2 meters, covered in tough cosmoid scales, with bluish skin dotted by white spots.
尾びれは三つ葉のように分かれ、胸びれと腹びれは肉厚で、まるで足のように海底を這うことができた。
Her tail fin is trilobed, and her thick, fleshy pectoral and pelvic fins allow her to crawl along the seafloor like legs.

ラティの頭蓋骨は関節で前後に分かれ、大きな口を開けばどんな獲物も吸い込める。
Lati’s skull is jointed, allowing her to open her mouth enormously to suck in any prey.
だが、彼女の脳は頭蓋腔のわずか1パーセントしか占めず、複雑な思考は必要なかった。
Yet her brain occupies only about 1% of the cranial cavity, so complex thoughts were unnecessary.

ただ、生きる。それだけで十分だった。
Just living. That was enough.

ラティは3億年以上変わらぬ姿で、この深海を漂っていた。
Lati had drifted in this deep sea for over 300 million years in an unchanged form.
彼女の種族は「生きている化石」と地上の人間たちに呼ばれるが、そんな呼び名など知る由もない。
Her kind is called “living fossils” by humans on the surface, but she knows nothing of such names.

彼女の人生はゆっくりと流れ、寿命は100年を超える。
Her life flows slowly, with a lifespan exceeding 100 years.
動きは超スローで、岩陰に身を寄せ、獲物が近づくのを待つ。
Her movements are extremely slow; she rests in the shadows of rocks, waiting for prey to approach.

急ぐ必要などない。深海の時間は永遠だ。
There is no need to hurry. The time of the deep sea is eternal.

5年前、ラティは一匹のオスと出会った。
Five years ago, Lati met a male.
深海の闇で、互いのひれが触れ合い、静かな交尾が終わった。
In the darkness of the deep, their fins touched, and a quiet mating concluded.

その日から、彼女の体内で卵が育ち始めた。
From that day, eggs began to develop inside her.
シーラカンスの妊娠は卵胎生。体の中で卵を育て、30センチほどの赤ちゃんを産むのだ。
Coelacanths are ovoviviparous—they nurture eggs within the body and give birth to pups about 30 cm long.

だが、その期間は人間の想像を超える。5年、いやそれ以上。
However, that period exceeds human imagination: 5 years, or perhaps even longer.

ラティの腹は徐々に膨らみ、重くなった。
Lati’s belly gradually swelled and grew heavy.

彼女はそれを守るため、普段より深く潜るようになった。
To protect it, she began diving deeper than usual.

水圧の変化に耐えるため、浮き袋は脂肪で満たされ、背骨の代わりに中空の管に油が詰まっていた。
To withstand changes in pressure, her swim bladder is filled with fat, and instead of a bony spine, a hollow notochord is filled with oil.

ある日、ラティは異変を感じた。
One day, Lati sensed something unusual.
深海の流れが変わり、普段より暖かい水が混じり込む。
The deep-sea currents changed, mixing in warmer water than usual.

人間たちの船が上空をうろつき、網を落とす気配だ。
Humans’ ships are prowling above, ready to drop nets.
1938年に仲間の一匹が発見され、世界を驚かせたように、今また脅威が迫る。
Just as one of her kind shocked the world when discovered in 1938, a new threat approaches.

ラティの小さな脳は、複雑な計画を立てられない。
Lati’s small brain cannot devise complex plans.
ただ、本能が囁く。「逃げろ。子を守れ。」
Only instinct whispers: “Flee. Protect the child.”

彼女はゆっくりと動き出した。
She began to move slowly.
肉厚のひれを海底に突き立て、這うように進む。
Pushing her fleshy fins against the seafloor, she crawls forward.

速度は時速数キロメートル。
Her speed is only a few kilometers per hour.
急ぐと体が疲弊する。
Hurrying would exhaust her body.

妊娠中の体は重く、5年の歳月が彼女のエネルギーを吸い取っていた。
Her pregnant body is heavy; five years have drained her energy.
道中、獲物を探す。
Along the way, she searches for prey.

魚やイカを大きな口で吸い込み、肉食の本能を満たす。
She sucks in fish and squid with her large mouth, satisfying her carnivorous instinct.
だが、脳が小さいせいか、記憶は曖昧だ。
Yet, perhaps because her brain is small, her memories are vague.

昨日食べた獲物の味も、すぐに忘れる。
The taste of yesterday’s prey is quickly forgotten.
ただ、腹の子が動く感触だけが鮮明だった。
Only the sensation of the child moving in her belly remains vivid.

旅の途中で、ラティは古い洞窟を見つけた。
On her journey, Lati found an ancient cave.
そこはかつての仲間たちの住処。
It was once the dwelling place of her kin.

壁に化石のような痕跡が残る。
Fossil-like traces remain on the walls.
彼女の種族は遺伝子の変化が極めて遅く、7千5百万年前の絶滅を免れた者たちだ。
Her species changes genetically extremely slowly, having escaped extinction 75 million years ago.

ラティはそこで休んだ。
Lati rested there.
暗闇の中で、腹の子に語りかけるように体を揺らす。
In the darkness, she sways her body as if speaking to the child in her belly.

「お前も、この世界で生きろ。ゆっくりと。」
“Live in this world too. Slowly.”

しかし、脅威は近づいていた。
But the threat drew nearer.

人間の潜水艇が光を放ち、深海を照らす。
A human submersible shines light, illuminating the deep sea.

ラティの青い体が一瞬、映し出された。
Lati’s blue body is momentarily revealed.

彼女の脳はパニックを起こさない。
Her brain does not panic.

ただ、逃げる。
She simply flees.

ひれを動かし、尾びれを振る。
Moving her fins, she waves her trilobed tail.

三つ葉状の尾が水を切り、ゆっくり加速する。
The three-lobed tail cuts through the water, slowly accelerating.

潜水艇の音が響く中、ラティはさらに深く潜った。
Amid the submersible’s noise, Lati dives even deeper.

水深700メートル。そこは彼女の限界に近い。
700 meters deep—near her limit.

浮き袋の脂肪が体を支え、水圧から守る。
The fat in her swim bladder supports her body and protects against pressure.

5年の妊娠期間は、子に強靭さを与えるためのものだった。
The five-year gestation period exists to grant the offspring toughness.

人間の子供が9ヶ月で生まれるのに対し、シーラカンスの子は体内でじっくり育つ。
While human children are born after 9 months, coelacanth young develop slowly inside the body.

栄養を吸収し、硬い鱗を形成する。
They absorb nutrients and form hard scales.

ラティは痛みを感じながらも、耐えた。
Lati endured the pain.

脳が小さいおかげで、苦痛を深く考えない。
Thanks to her small brain, she does not dwell deeply on suffering.

ただ、生きる。
She simply lives.

やがて、潜水艇は去った。
Eventually, the submersible departed.

ラティは安堵し、岩陰に戻った。
Lati felt relief and returned to the rock shadows.

妊娠の終わりが近づいている。
The end of pregnancy approaches.

腹の子が激しく動く。
The child in her belly moves vigorously.

ついに、その日が来た。
Finally, the day arrived.

暗い深海で、ラティは体を曲げ、大きな口を開けた。
In the dark deep sea, Lati bends her body and opens her large mouth.

30センチの小さなシーラカンスが産み落とされた。
A 30-centimeter baby coelacanth is born.

子は母の姿を縮小したよう。
The pup resembles a miniature version of its mother.

青い肌、白い斑点、肉厚のひれ。
Blue skin, white spots, fleshy fins.

すぐに泳ぎ出し、闇に溶け込んだ。
It immediately swims away and melts into the darkness.

ラティは子を見送った。
Lati watches her child go.

脳が小さい彼女は、別れの悲しみを感じない。
With her small brain, she feels no sorrow at the parting.

ただ、本能が満足する。
Only instinct is satisfied.

子は一人で生きるだろう。
The child will live alone.

ゆっくりと、深海を漂い、獲物を待つ。
Slowly drifting in the deep sea, waiting for prey.

妊娠期間の長さが、子に独立心を与えていた。
The long gestation had given the child independence.

それから数年、ラティは再び漂う生活に戻った。
Years later, Lati returned to her drifting life.

人間たちの脅威は時折訪れるが、彼女の種族は生き延びる。
Human threats come occasionally, but her species survives.

アフリカ東海岸のコモロ諸島周辺、インドネシア近海。
Around the Comoros Islands off East Africa, and near Indonesia.

わずかな生息地で、静かに。
In their few remaining habitats, quietly.
