馬の基本的な特徴
- 分類と生態: 馬は哺乳類・奇蹄目・ウマ科で、草食動物。群れで生活し、温和で友好的ですが、草食動物なので警戒心が強く、逃げ足が速いです。
- 体格: 体高（肩までの高さ）は平均140～180cm、体重は300～800kgくらい（品種による）。小型のポニーから大型の馬までさまざま。
- 寿命: 約25～30年。まれに40年を超えることも。
- 妊娠と出産: 妊娠期間は約11ヶ月（335日）。生まれた子馬は30～90分で立ち上がり、すぐに走れるようになります。
- 食事: 草や干し草を主食。1日中少しずつ食べ続けます。
- 睡眠: 立ったまま浅い眠りが可能（ロック機構で脚を固定）。深い眠りは横になって取ります。
感覚と体のすごいところ
- 目: 視界が約350度と非常に広く、左右の目で別々のものを見られます（単眼視）。眼球は陸上哺乳類で最大級！
- 耳: 10個の筋肉で180度回転可能。左右独立して動かせ、音の方向を素早く察知。感情も耳の向きで表現します（前向き=興味、後ろ=怒りや警戒）。
- 鼻: 嗅覚が人間の約1000倍敏感。
- 脚と走り: 時速60km以上出る品種も。鼻呼吸しかできず、口で息ができません（吐くこともできない）。
- 毛色: 栗毛、鹿毛、芦毛、白毛など多種多様。白斑や旋毛で個体識別します。
野生の馬（ムスタングなど）はこれらの特徴を活かして、広大な土地で自由に暮らしています。
本物の野生種モウコノウマも似た特徴を持っています。
